5 spiritual affirmations for tough times

Remember the old Beatles song, “When you are in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me speaking words of wisdom …” When you are in times of trouble, what do you say to yourself? What goes around and around in your head?

When something happens to us that we label as “bad” – we lose our job, our spouse leaves us, our investments collapse, we get sick – what does our inner voice say? There are many things in life that we cannot control; Aside from the three examples above, there are hurricanes, earthquakes, drunk drivers just to name a few. What we tell ourselves when these things happen is something we may control.

You can write your own affirmations, but you can also use prayer and quotes from your favorite spiritual tradition to guide you, focus, and return to a state of being positive and open. At first you have to consciously remember to repeat these Spiritual Affirmations during the “good” times so that they become part of your inner repertoire; You can then turn to them in case of need.

Throughout my life I have collected these spiritual affirmations from many sources, hopefully I will remember where and from whom I learned them. In this article, I will mention only non-religious quotes. I have used these affirmations myself and given them to clients to work with. These are just some of my favorites, in other articles I will mention a few more.

  1. “I dress with a cloak of Light composed of the Love, Power and Wisdom of God, not only for my protection, but so that all those who come in contact with him are drawn to God and be healed.” This is a good statement when protection is needed. I read this in a book by Isabel Hickey many years ago and have used it ever since.
  2. “Whatever happens to me, whatever torments me and takes me out of the resplendent spheres of the Spirit, my divine origin is an eternal reality, although it is hidden in the depths of the soul.” This is from Rudolph Steiner.
  3. “I choose to be a pioneer of the future and free myself as a prisoner of my past.” This came from a talk Deepak Chopra gave.
  4. “I have the strength, the depth, the ability, the wisdom, the will, the love and the purpose, I will prevail.” Adapted from a quote by Jean Shinola Bolen
  5. “Every decision I make is a choice between a grievance and a miracle. I let go of grievances and choose miracles.” Deepak chopra

We don’t see the big picture when we are in the middle of the confusion. So, go ahead and write these Spiritual Affirmations on index cards and take them with you. Memorize them and repeat them when you find yourself engaging in automatic negative self-talk, and see if you feel different when you repeat them. I’d love for you to share your findings with me.
