Basic principles of a modern business dress code

Today, many commercial companies have unspoken rules of a corporate dress code; some of them even have the writings. The importance of business attracts and its influence on customers has been recognized by most of the world. Proper staff attire symbolizes professionalism and customer loyalty.

American business clothing designer Adriana Coley says that the appearance of the staff can say more about the company than they themselves can.

A dress code for the employee connotes a sense of unity and a sign of belonging to the particular group. Furthermore, clothes speak for their owner: the way an employee or businessman dresses can say a lot about him as a person. Usually, people get a first impression of your professionalism, intelligence, and credibility by looking at your clothing. You may not have spoken a word yet, but your partners and colleagues have already made their judgments. Often times, your look at work influences not only perceptions, but job promotions as well.

This is why being well dressed is so important and we are going to talk about the general principles of the modern business dress code in this article.

According to some job search websites, a person dressed in a business casual style should look “neat, orderly, and professional.” What does it mean?

There is a list of standard requirements in terms of dress and grooming that successful businessmen often meet. First of all, you need to think about your audience and the corporate culture of the company when choosing your dress.

Second, always wear clothes that fit perfectly, forget about tight pants or narrow skirts, they are uncomfortable because they restrict your movements.

The clothes must be well ironed and have no wrinkles.

Formal jackets must be buttoned.

When it comes to perfume, a fragrance should be mild, for both women and men.

It is absolutely forbidden to wear shorts, sneakers and slippers in almost all organizations. See-through clothing, plunging necklines, and short skirts for ladies are not appropriate in business. We do not recommend wearing clothing that is too tight or shiny.

Women can wear classic pants or skirt sets (remember to check the length of the skirt, it should not be too short, better covering the knees).

Usually women are required to wear skin-colored tights or stockings in the office. Shoes must be with heels (but not too high). Black and dark colors are preferable.

Your hair must always be under control; natural colors and simple haircuts are a classic business approach. Manicure and makeup should look calm and modest.

The dress code for women is quite strict when it comes to jewelry. Be careful with their size and shine: colorful jewelry or large pieces are too much. Earrings and necklaces should not make noise when moved; minimalism is the fundamental principle of wearing jewelry and the entire business dress code.

As for model blouses and skirts, the sleeves are supposed to be long. In summer you can wear a short variant, but it is better to cover the shoulders.

Jeans are not on the “white list” of most serious corporations. Although some modern companies allow their employees to wear smart casual wear on Fridays, the best alternative for both genders is still a classic suit.

If you work in a business environment, the color of your clothes is supposed to be calm and relaxing. Classic black or elegant dark blue can be combined with various shades of gray, beige and brown. But there should be no more than 3 different colors and 2 kinds of patterns on your dress.

You are allowed to diversify your appeal with some stylish accessories.

Finally, let’s take a closer look at the men’s dress code.

The conservative business style includes traditional dress shirt, preferably white, lace-up shoes, preferably black, classic jacket, and a suitable tie of restricted color that reaches the middle of the belt buckle. A classic but elegant watch would not be superfluous. Calf-length socks must be the same color as the suit or shoes.

Some of the most common and appropriate combinations for men can be:

  • Polo with chinos, casual belt and leather shoes;

  • A classic long-sleeved shirt with cotton pants, a suitable belt and loafers;

  • V-neck sweater with round neck T-shirt, straight jeans and lace-up leather boots.

Knowing the basic rules of the dress code accepted in the business sector is not only the attribute of style, but a sign of your sophistication and exquisite taste.
