Cats meeting cats – Presentations

Cats are solitary animals by nature. They prefer to hunt and live alone. It’s understandable that many cats have trouble meeting other cats, including ones they’ve brought home as new members of the family. This process must be carefully monitored and managed, as the cat that has been living there for a long time is likely to become territorial. If your cat tends to be overly aggressive, you are likely going to have a battle. If your cat has had the company of another cat in the past, there may be no problem. There is no way of knowing how the animals will react to each other, but prepare for the worst.

The introduction

The first step in bringing new cats together is the meeting. Avoiding aggressive behavior early on is vital, otherwise you may never like each other.

  • When you bring the new cat home, don’t let the cats see each other. Put the new cat in an adjoining room.
  • Feed cats in separate rooms; this will allow them to smell each other. This helps them get used to eating together in peace.
  • Play with the cats at the door, encouraging the one on the other side of the door to get under the door, hopefully to entice the cats to play with each other under the door.
  • Another technique to get them used to each other is to clean one cat with a towel, go to the other cat and clean it, go back to the first cat and clean it again.

After a while you have to let the cats see each other. You don’t want to just put the cats together in one room; here are a couple of options. One way to do this is to use a screen or some other type of separator between the cats so that little by little they get used to not touching each other. Use this for a couple of days if possible so they have time to adjust to each other. Once you’re pretty sure they’re not being aggressive towards each other, lower the screen. Make sure your cats are calm when you do this. A spray bottle works wonders if the party gets a little heated and the cats need to calm down.

If the cats become aggressive, you should separate them again for a while using the screen. You may have to do this process more than once until the cats get used to each other. You may also want to keep them apart at night for a little longer until you’re sure they’re friendly.

When attempting to introduce a new cat to more than one cat in the household, final introductions should be made individually to prevent the cats from becoming protective or jealous of each other.

The most important thing to remember when introducing your new cat to the home is to stay calm, be patient, and not rush them together. They need time to adjust and get used to each other. Do not leave them alone until you are sure that they are not going to be aggressive.
