Dizziness after exercise

If you feel dizzy, it is usually due to a reduction in the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the brain. The oxygen or blood supply to the brain is affected due to low blood pressure or rapid dehydration of the body. However, post-exercise grogginess is invariably due to blood circulation that occurs due to the increased pumping action of the heart.

When you exercise vigorously, your heart beats faster than normal. More blood is pumped to the brain and other parts of the body. However, when you abruptly stop exercising, your heart continues to function in the same way, causing dizziness. This feeling is quite similar to vertigo in that you will experience dizziness and nausea. Nausea is due to the intestines being deprived of blood during the exercise session and moving towards the muscles that need it.

Although lightheadedness after exercise is not a cause for concern, it could be an indication of a more serious underlying health problem. You should have an exam to rule out the possibility of heart disease.

The best way to combat this feeling of dizziness and nausea is to make sure you don’t abruptly stop your exercise session. Freshen up a bit before you quit exercising. In fact, that’s why health experts recommend warm-up and cool-down exercises before and after a workout.

Also, be sure to keep your body well hydrated during your workouts. One of the other main reasons for dizziness and nausea during exercise is dehydration. If possible, eat half a light snack before you start exercising. Also, during your training, remember to breathe correctly. This will ensure that the blood supply to different parts of the body is maintained, including the brain, muscles, and intestines.
