Energy transition – Vienna Airport builds Austria’s largest photovoltaic system

Vienna Airport plans to build Austria’s largest photovoltaic system on 24 hectares by 2022. In total, around 30 million kilowatt hours of solar power per year should be generated together with existing installations, according to a broadcast on Wednesday. This corresponds to around a third of their own electricity consumption. The airport wants to get closer to its goal of “becoming the first CO2-neutral airport in Europe in a few years”.

However, the conditions of the climate protection ministry would have to be met before construction. “Only very limited areas in the immediate vicinity of the runways” are to be used for the system, explained Günther Ofner, CEO of Flughafen Wien AG. This represents an “ideal synergy”. “Vienna Airport is the best example of how successful business and climate protection go hand in hand,” stated State Secretary Magnus Brunner (ÖVP). (apa)
