Exfoliation: the best organic facial scrubs

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outer surface of the body. Exfoliation allows silkier and more radiant skin to be visible as tired, dull and dead skin sheds. As with most things, too much of a good thing can really be bad for you. Exfoliating excessively can cause sensitivity and inflammation of the skin. Before applying organic makeup, consider exfoliating and thoroughly cleansing your skin.

Exfoliation can be done in two ways: physical or chemical exfoliation.

Physical exfoliation involves the use of a pumice stone, loofah, or a naturally abrasive ingredient like jojoba beads, almond flour, or raspberry seeds that will buff away dead skin cells. It is necessary to physically or mechanically exfoliate the skin in an upward circular motion to remove dead skin cells.

A chemical scrub uses acids or enzymes (AHA or BHA) to remove dead skin cells found on the skin. Glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids are examples of chemical exfoliants used in skin care to remove dead skin cells.

Since your skin rejuvenates quickly, you may not see the benefits of a regular exfoliation. Using clean products on your face, such as organic makeup, you can reduce the amount of exfoliation needed.

It is best to exfoliate at least once a week. If you have particularly oily or congested skin, you may need to increase your regimen to twice a week. If your skin ever becomes too dry or irritated, stop using it or exfoliate less often. Always remember to stack your sunscreen after exfoliating. Newly exposed skin is more sensitive to the sun, and chemical exfoliants like AHA and BHA increase the likelihood of sunburn. As always … read your organic makeup labels
