Health problems, grooming and living conditions of the Shiba Inu dog breed

Health Issues: Due to exceptionally careful breeding, since the original gene pool of today’s dogs was so small, this dog suffers from very few ailments. His ailments are hip dysplasia, PRA and slipped patella. They have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Grooming: This breed sheds a lot seasonally, but not too much the rest of the time. His short hair is fairly easy to groom, with a stiff bristle brush and maybe a comb. To avoid removing the natural waterproofing of the dogs coat, bathe only when really necessary and be mindful of dry shampoos.

Living Conditions: The breed has an all-weather waterproof coat, which means they can live outdoors, provided adequate shelter is provided and the area is safe enough. However, they do not like to be isolated and prefer to live indoors with a family. Their fur protects them from heat and cold, but in hot weather they benefit from ventilation if they are kept indoors. With proper exercise, this dog would be suitable for apartment living as they are only moderately active when indoors. As is often the case, your master, or head trainer, must make a good statement about your pet.

This, of course, must be done in a calm but strong manner, to establish him as the leader of the pack, but not to alienate him. They are born hunters and while they bond well with a family, care should be taken with smaller household pets. If you are a strong leader for them, you can sometimes manage to stop them, but this is not something to rely on. Great care should be taken when this dog is outdoors and not on a leash as they love to chase.
