How Muay Thai Kickboxing Workouts Changed My Body
I have been taking muay thai kickboxing for about 3 months.
now twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. Has been
An incredible experience. Thai kickboxing workouts are
intense, make no mistake about it. Although I am in
a beginner class, sweat falls like a summer rain!
We start every kickboxing workout by lining up at the gym.
in front of our Kru, or teacher. He bows to us, we bow to him,
and welcomes us with a few words. So we start with
Skipping rope.
Crazy as it may sound, it seemed to me that jumping rope was
incredibly challenging. I started with 25 extra pounds
around my waist, and maybe my coordination was a little
switched off. The rope is covered in hard plastic, plus I’m barefoot.
And the rope was hitting my toes and it really stung!
I watched the more experienced students jump rope and
See if I can keep up Sometimes I could go 15-20 jumps
in a row before hitting my toes or head on the rope.
But after a month I understood. We jump rope in
Thai kickboxing workouts until we break a sweat, maybe
4 to 6 minutes.
Then comes the devious part, cardiovascular conditioning.

We generally train technicians for 20 to 25 minutes. Y

combo and then right thai kick. It is always different. I
I really enjoy the variety, avoid training ever
going stale.
But we always end up with pain … abdominal pain. You lie
on the floor on your back and lift your legs from the
ground until they are straight in the air. Your classmate
stands on his head, roughly with his feet close to his
shoulders, looking down at your feet. Your partner pushes you
feet, forcing his legs to lower to the ground. You raise
your legs back up, the partner pushes them back
down … this goes on for 3 minutes straight. Your abs are
burn after 1, scream after 2, and they are usually
approaching failure before the session ends. Then you get to
Change and torture your partner!
Honestly, I thought I saw an abdominal muscle in my body.
the other day in the mirror. It’s impossible, I still have
at least 10 pounds of fat to lose, but I feel fantastic!
My energy levels are off limits, I’m sleeping a lot
better at night and I love it. I highly recommend it
