Reading is a basic skill mastered by most of the people in the world. It is a skill that is taught from a young age and can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Most people develop this ability and it usually reaches its peak in adolescence. Then there are those who realize how important this skill is and take it to a much higher level.

Why do some people love to read and others don’t? Some people can read a book a month, or even 1 or 2 books a week, and others may not even read 5 books a year. Why the disparity? Reading offers you the best value and is the most enjoyable form of entertainment. It helps keep your mind young and agile, while you can learn and be entertained at the same time.

In today’s world there are many things that concern our time. Many people, especially children, spend too much time in front of the computer. Children ages 8 to 18 spend an average of 44.5 hours a week on the computer. To put it in perspective, most adults don’t work that many hours a week. The person will become what the mind concentrates on. I am sure that most of the time children spend online is not on educational sites that help develop their minds. Some of these places are dark places to go, and others are just games that are used to entertain and pass the time.

Life is too short, let us fill our minds with knowledge, education and history. There are so many books available, on various subjects, that there is no reason not to spend time reading. Reading some of the best books ever written can affect your life tremendously and, conversely, reading books that are not worth reading can affect you poorly. How many self-help books does the average person read in a year? When you hear some of the most successful people in the world share how they spend their time, they will tell you about the books they read. As they say, “If you want to be successful, do what successful people do.”

If you are a successful executive or business owner, you have probably read a good number of books by now. Most of the people who read this article probably enjoy reading and reading whenever they can. Reading affects the mind and the way of thinking. It affects both the body and the brain. It could have a calming effect, as well as an exciting and stimulating result. It could help bring ideas to life, as well as make one think and really use the mind. It is probably the number one activity, besides walking, that everyone should be encouraged to do in order to live a long and healthy life.

Don’t stop at a book and say it’s all for a while, but be encouraged to read more and more. In fact, after reading a good book, it is better to start with another.
