How to clean your house like a pro

For several years I worked with a cleaning office cleaning service. From that experience I learned many tricks to make cleaning the house easier and faster.

First, decide the level of disgust that bothers you. If you don’t mind a little dust but can’t stand clothes on the floor, focus on that problem.

Second, treat house cleaning like work: schedule a regular cleaning time, put it on a calendar like you would a business appointment, and stick with that appointment. Get your family involved in the project. If everyone works together, all tasks are completed quickly.

Third, gather your tools. A professional has a push cart, but that is not necessary in a home. Buy or make a cart containing your cleaning supplies. Put a feather duster, liquid cleaner, damp cloth or sponge, dry towel without links, and window cleaner and store in a convenient closet. If you don’t have young children, keep extra supplies where they will be used: bathroom tile cleaner, toilet brush, etc. in the bathroom, cleaner in the kitchen.

Fourth, set a time limit. If you know you have an hour to finish all your weekly cleaning, you will become efficient and organized.

Fifth, decide what to do on a daily, weekly, monthly, and semi-annual basis. For example, daily tasks might include picking up all the clothes and putting them in the right places, doing the dishes, taking out the trash, cleaning the countertops, and putting away the books and magazines. Weekly chores could include dusting surfaces and window sills, washing the television, computer, and windows where the dog lays its nose, vacuuming rugs, mopping kitchen and bathroom floors, and cleaning the toilet. Make a list of your items and choose how often they should be done.

Okay, now you are really ready to go. Start in one room and put everything in its proper place. Then clean the top surfaces by dusting the tables and window sills. Clean your TV and computer screen. Clean countertops, sinks, and toilets. Lastly, clean the floor surfaces. Vacuum and mop.

Clever! Your first room is ready. Repeat for the other rooms in the house.

Turn on upbeat music, turn off the television, and just do it. Set your timer and see how much you can accomplish in the allotted time.

Professional janitors know that cleaning isn’t particularly fun, but it must be done. If you treat it like a job, scheduling time, what needs to be done, and a reward, you will find that cleaning your home will be much easier.
