How to get rid of the smell of vomit

Vomiting is one of the ways your gastrointestinal system gets rid of the “bad stuff.” It is usually a short-lived symptom; but the consequences of vomiting should be apparent even to the faintest of minds.

When you have children, pets, and/or a significant other who suffers from vertigo/morning sickness, vomiting is an unpleasant reality that you may need to clean up from time to time. It is important that you clean immediately to avoid stains and quickly disperse the unpleasant odor. To learn more about this topic, just read and follow the simple tips below.

Elimination of vomit odor

* Remove vomit from carpet or other surface; this should always be the first step. Try to do this without spreading the mess and be sure to wipe off any solids so only the wet stain remains. Also, if you’re nauseated, be sure to open the windows to get fresh air and let the fumes out, lest you donate your own pennies to the pile of semi-digested goop.

* Sponge the area stained by vomit with cold water. Then add half a cup of salt to two quarts of water and use this to further fluff up the area and rinse under running water.

If this doesn’t work, soak the stain for 30 minutes in cold water. Blot the area again with a sponge and some diluted dish detergent until the stain is gone.

*Spray the pet rug deodorizer liberally on the area and let it sit for a short time. Just suck it up! You may have to do this a couple of times; if so, let the second “dose” sit for a while longer or even rub the deodorant off with a damp cloth. Let it dry and vacuum again. You should do that.

* There’s something about vinegar when it comes to stains and odors, isn’t there? Vinegar (a weak acid) is a great way to clean, disinfect, and deodorize surfaces, including those of vomit victims.

Granted, vinegar doesn’t smell much better than vomit (one would say they smell about the same), but the smell of vinegar eventually subsides, while the smell of vomit does not. It is the lesser of two evils, so to speak.

* If the vomit has penetrated into the actual cushion of your coach or carpet, you may find it more difficult to get rid of the smell, but keep trying. You may need to saturate a cushion in vinegar water to get to the center and neutralize this odor.

Then let the cushion air dry in the hot sun for a few days. Then, just to make sure it’s completely dry, put the cover back on and tumble dry in the laundry room with fabric softener wipes. The combined heat of the sun and the laundry should help eliminate vomit odors that the vinegar water didn’t neutralize.

* Another thought; Once you’ve completely gotten rid of the vomit smell, try to baby-proof your diapers. If the cushions have zippered covers, take out all the cushions and wrap them in large plastic bags, taping as tightly as possible. Then put the cushions back in their cases.

Not only will you have waterproofed your cushions, but the plastic-wrapped cushions are easy to clean and maintain. In contrast, once you buy new cushions, never take them out of their vacuum-tight plastic packaging.

* Steam cleaning will help remove vomit odors. If soap and water don’t work, try renting a powerful steam cleaner with a handheld attachment. Whatever you do, don’t use harsh chemicals and make sure you do your best to dry the area you’ve cleaned.

* Here’s a joint method that uses a host of cleaning agents: Try spraying the affected area with a mixture of vinegar, Pine-Sol, and a scented liquid soap. Let it dry completely and then use some Febreze spray to finish the job. Sure, it’s hard to top all of that, but it’s better than trying to rush out and buy new furniture.

* Apply a generous amount of baking soda on the area and let it absorb. This will help remove the smell of vomit; Sodium bicarbonate is a great absorbent powder. Then, completely vacuum up the baking soda residue.

Once this is done, place a towel over the wet area, press the towel down and leave it on until the area dries completely. If the stench persists, consult a professional cleaner or repeat this method until the stench is gone.

* Speaking of cleaning professionals, they are also an open option to eliminate the smell of vomit. Whatever the renter’s situation, a professional cleaning service can cost much less money than most people would expect. In fact, if all else fails, there are commercial carpet and rug cleaning teams to help.

The cleaners provide all the equipment and detergents and most of all have the experience of having cleaned rooms that would probably make your vomit-stinking room smell like the Rose Parade in comparison.
