Buying cigarettes online is not illegal, but there are some regulations you should know about. It also found that one third of the sites featured special promotional programs.
A recent survey found that a large number of US-based sites were offering the opportunity to buy cigarettes at a discount. The survey also found that most of these sites did not provide adequate information about health risks associated with smoking, and that age requirements were not clearly displayed on the sites. In fact, 92% of the underage adolescents who attempted to buy cigarettes from ICVs successfully did so.
Some internet cigarette vendors also do not collect excise taxes from customers. This has been a major concern for the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, which mandates payment of federal excise tax on all products sold outside the United States. In April 2016, the Online Tobacco Retailers Association (OLTRA) filed a lawsuit against New York’s new law, which prohibits Internet-based tobacco sales. OLTRA claims the law discriminates against Indian retailers, who account for the majority of internet-based tobacco sales in the state.
