Juggling games with balls (stregging, racing, combat, etc.)

If you’re a member of a juggling club or visiting juggling conventions, or just hanging out with lots of other jugglers on a regular basis, then you may be interested in some fun games you can play. Some of them require the ability to juggle and others do not, so you will be able to find one that suits your skills. Enjoy!

Stretched: The goal is to successfully catch all the balls from your teammates’ serves. You need 5 balls arranged in a straight line on the ground. The game is played in teams of 2 people. One person is the catcher and the other person has to kick/throw up the balls for them to catch (either in the person’s hands or in a container or bag). It is best to practice this event with your partner before the game starts so you can figure out the best technique and also who is best to be the receiver. A variation of this game would be that there is another row of 5 balls, and the roles are switched after the first 5 balls have been caught so that the thrower becomes the catcher. With both games, the fastest team is the winner.

Race: A destination is chosen (at the British Juggling Convention Brighton we ran to the seafront and back to the playground) and the only rule is that you have to run back and forth while constantly juggling, and the first person back is the winner. If someone drops an object, they are declared “out” or penalized with 3 seconds before they can continue running. Beware of many people cheating!

Simon says: Everyone juggles 3 balls and the caller yells out what moves they need to do next. If they don’t say the words “Simon says” before an order, and people do the order, they’re out! If they drop a ball at any time, they’re out! Good game for children.

3 person wheelbarrow race: Two people grab one leg each of the “wheelbarrow person” and have to juggle a cascade of 3 balls between them as they drive the wheelbarrow to the finish line.

Quarrel: Two jugglers stand back to back in a small, defined area and both juggle 3 balls. At an agreed signal, the two jugglers have to push their opponent out of the circle by backing into each other. The first person to drop a ball or get pushed out of the circle loses. No kicking or elbowing your opponent!
