ORF “press hour” with DDr. Christoph Grabenwarter, President of the Constitutional Court

On March 21st at 11.05 a.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Investigations against the finance minister, high-ranking members of the judiciary and also against the incumbent constitutional judge Wolfgang Brandstetter recently made headlines. The ruling party ÖVP is increasingly critical of the work of individual institutions in the judiciary. How strained is the relationship between the judiciary and politics? Will the establishment of a federal prosecutor, which has been discussed for years, ensure a strengthening of the public prosecutor’s offices? What reservations does the President have about decisions of the Constitutional Court being made transparent? Even the coronavirus is not allowing the Constitutional Court to rest: around 100 complaints are currently pending with the Constitutional Court. How does Grabenwarter assess the proportionality and legitimacy of the measures taken, does the government strike the right balance between public health and respect for the fundamental rights of the individual? The VfGH repeatedly decides questions of great socio-political importance, most recently the lifting of the ban on assisted suicide or the lifting of the headscarf ban in elementary schools – how far-reaching does the President see such decisions?
