Principles Versus Tactics: How To Write A Sales Email In Under 30 Minutes

Have you ever tried to solve a Rubik’s cube?

You know, those little 3×3 cubes with different colors on each side?

Last year I finally learned how to solve one of those bastards.

And there’s actually a great lesson to be learned when it comes to writing emails that sell your product … without being spammy … or even being a great writer.

So how does a Rubik’s cube relate to writing a sales email?

Let me explain:

The “world’s most feared negotiator,” Jim Camp, spoke about how principles would always trump tactics.

This is what he meant:

When you follow a set of principles instead of focusing on “specific phrases” to say in a negotiation, you are immediately playing a completely different game than 97% of all other negotiators.

You see, in any area of business (and life in general), timeless principles can always be found.

Principles that just work.

They have always worked.

And they will always work.

This is what I mean:

When you follow a set of principles, you are following a proven path to success.

The same is true when writing emails that sell.

Or learn to solve a Rubik’s cube.

For example, with a Rubik’s cube, there are certain “algorithms” that you follow to solve the cube.

They are essentially different “moves”, depending on the situation.

And when you follow the correct set of algorithms, you will solve the cube (my record is 1 minute 25 seconds).

That’s the power of following a set of principles.

For example, following the example of the Rubik’s cube:

Did you know that there are 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible combinations or 43.2 trillion combinations to solve a Rubik’s cube?

However, no matter how many combinations … or … situations you come across, there are only a few sets of principles you need to learn to solve the cube.

Like when you sit down to write an email on your email list.

It doesn’t matter what product you sell.

It doesn’t matter how big your list is.

It doesn’t matter if you are writing an engagement email or a sales email.

Because once you follow a proven set of principles when writing your emails, you never have to worry about writer’s block … or worry about coming up with great ideas … or worry about looking like spam or a seller.

It is those principles that I use to produce new content every day.

And, in less than 30 minutes.

Like the article you just read.

Here’s a quick way to do this:

Open your phone.

Specifically, your Notes application.

Create a new note called something like “Email Ideas” or “Story Ideas.”

Then every day, you will look for different things to happen to you. Don’t worry about whether they are interesting or not, you are just on the hunt for things that happen around you.

For example, in my notes app right now, I have an idea about an episode of Friends, which might give me an interesting angle for a future email.

I’m still not 100% sure what it’s going to be.

But eventually I will think of something.

If you also do this every day, you will never have to struggle with writer’s block.
