Simple strategies for playing checkers online

When you play checkers online, it’s a great way to be exposed to players of different skill levels, which is important if you’re looking for more than just a casual game on the front porch with the kids. You will have to become a strategic player. Online play will also allow you to work on specific parts of the game, such as openings and endgame setups.

Checker Strategy Resources

Learn from the masters: There are many resources for learning classical positions, both online and in print. Three books to consider for beginner strategy tips:

  • Lees Guide by James Lees
  • total checkers by Richard Pass
  • family issues by Ben Boland

Positioning your checkers pieces

  • Keeping your pieces in the middle of the board gives you more options. Side pieces have limited mobility, but are better protected if you plan to queen them.
  • Avoid corners; avoid getting trapped. The “true corners” (top right and bottom left) provide only a single output square, limiting your mobility.
  • Keep your pieces together, especially in the later stages of the game. Scattered men are easier to eliminate.

Sometimes sacrifice is required

  • When you are ahead in the piece count, exchanging men can increase the proportion of your advantage. An exchange means letting one of your pieces be captured, but only if the capturing piece becomes vulnerable at the end of its turn.
  • You will lose pieces, so plan for it. It’s okay to sacrifice pieces if you can keep your piece count even and that advances your strategy.
  • Remember, a player has to jump if that move is available. Forcing your opponent to make a move that will result in huge losses is a great way to turn the game in your favor.
