Universities are failing to get enough computer and information technology graduates

The field of computer science and information technology is one of the most in-demand fields of employment today. The Federal Government projects a 22% increase in the total number of jobs between now and 2020. The trend is expected to continue.

Industry experts say public and private sector employers are looking for qualified individuals to work as web developers, security analysts, network administrators, IT support specialists, and other specialized IT-related employment jobs.

College graduates with the necessary skills and knowledge in information technology can have numerous career opportunities. The demand is widespread.

However, the fact is that America’s colleges and universities are not preparing enough people to fill the vacancies. Evidence that employers are experiencing difficulty finding qualified Americans to work in computer-related occupations can be found in the continuing demand for H-1B visas for foreign workers.

The Brookings Institute reports that American businesses continue to face a shortage of available workers in the fields of science and technology. Computer occupations remain among the job classifications for which H-1B visas are sought. Brookings recommends that the federal government immediately adjust the limits so that employment needs by region can be met as soon as possible. The Institute further suggests that the fees charged to apply for the H-1B visa be spent on programs that train American workers in high-demand occupations that are currently being filled by workers from other countries.

Cisco, a leading global networking company, confirms that demand for skilled workers exceeds supply. Jeanne Beliveau-Dunn, vice president and general manager of Learning at Cisco, recently said in a Forbes magazine article, “Absolutely, there is a skills gap in IT. It’s where the jobs will be in the future.”

William Kamela, senior director of education and workforce at Microsoft’s Office of Legal and Corporate Affairs, said: “Nationwide, there are about 40,000 computer science graduates a year, but the nation needs 122,000.” Kazmela adds, “Microsoft cannot find enough people to fill all of its positions.”

The demand for information technology workers is high and the compensation for information technology workers is above average. Modern society and economies are literally powered by computer technology. It takes hundreds of thousands of information specialists to make it work.

There seems to be a serious disconnect between job demand, educational institutions, and students. Says an educational leader: “The education system in the US has failed to meet the demand for employment. School administrators speak a good game but ignore reality. The existing undergraduate curriculum tends to be too broad. Students must take responsibility and educate themselves on career opportunities. Most schools avoid doing so. A person who gains the information technology skills and knowledge that are in demand can cope with the recession in their future. Heaven is the limit “.

The facts confirm that the United States has a shortage of skilled information technology workers. The demand for these workers is strong.
