Why Poodles End Up In A Rescue Center

There are thousands of all kinds of poodle rescue organizations from which you can adopt a poodle dog. If the poodle is such a smart and sweet dog, why are there so many homeless? Each one has its own story.

Abuse and neglect

Some of the owners who abused or neglected them were forced to hand over their poodle dogs by the police or animal protection officers. Many of the behavior problems in the Poodle breed, such as food aggression, are due to abuse or neglect.

Wandering without identification

Many poodle owners forget to implant an identification chip in their dog that is worth hundreds of dollars, and the poodle will find itself on the streets without any contact information available about its owners. It is impossible to know if the poodle was deliberately abandoned or if it ran away from its owner and got lost.

Conduct disorders

Some owners give up their poodles due to behavior problems. The poodle may not be domesticated or may not be trained to bark. You may be unlucky enough to discover for yourself the real problem that caused the former owner to give up his poodle.

Health problems

Poodles are subject to some pretty serious genetic diseases. Treating some diseases like Addison’s disease can be very expensive. The owner may give up the dog because he can no longer pay the vet bills.

Failure of amateur breeding

There are people who are trying to make some money selling poodle puppies. And if they don’t find buyers, they may not be able to afford all the dogs, either.

Other times, a female poodle will get pregnant by design or mistake and the owner puts the puppies up for adoption because he cannot find a good home for them.

Failed show plans

Some people buy purebred poodle dogs for shows. They don’t realize that just because a poodle is purebred doesn’t automatically make it a show dog. Many of the purebred poodles have minor flaws that prevent them from becoming AKC champions.

Knowing that your poodle will never be an award winner may be a reason to put him up for adoption, as he still makes an excellent pet.

Homeowners may have personal problems

Sometimes the poodle is left homeless through no fault of his own. There are many cases in which poodle owners indulge their pets due to personal problems or simply because they got bored with such responsibility.

Some people buy poodle puppies because they are so adorable that they simply fall in love with the puppy and take nothing else into account when buying. They simply believe that their responsibility ends once they bring the puppy home. They are not prepared for the large amount of time and attention they need to take good care of the puppy.

Before adopting a dog from a poodle rescue center we investigated the reasons why the dog got into that kind of situation. In fact, not asking the right questions is one of the top ten poodle rescue mistakes.
