Do’s and Don’ts of Auto Repair

Auto repair done right can be the difference between keeping a job and losing it. It can mean the difference between taking a loved one to the doctor or hospital in an emergency or having devastating consequences. It can mean the difference between making it to the grocery store several miles away to take advantage of all the great deals on fresh produce and granulated bread or settling for pricey below-average fare at the local mini-mart.

It might mean picking the kids up from school or having them ride the bus with that grumpy, gum-sucking bus driver who looks like he just got out of the state penitentiary. It might mean taking your dream boat out on a date or watching someone else drive off in their red sports car. Here are some do’s and don’ts for choosing an automotive service location:

– Choose a place that is conveniently located. How will you get home or to work if the repair shop is across town? Choose a location that is convenient for your home or office. Can you walk to where you need to go while the repair is being done?

– Choose a certified mechanic. Mechanics who work under the hood of your vehicle must have substantial training, experience, and certification. Ask the store owner and you’ll find out.

– Don’t wait until the last minute to do maintenance on your car. Going on a cross-country trip in the morning but haven’t serviced the vehicle in a long time? This is a big no-no. Many stores can get you in quickly, but it’s unlikely you’ll be in and out in a matter of minutes.

– Do not ignore the flashing warning lights on your vehicle. Those lights mean something. It could be anything from tire pressure issues to needing an oil change. It could also mean something terrible is going on inside your engine. The longer you drive it without service, the worse it will get. Pay attention to the flashing lights on your dashboard. They are there to help you.

– Don’t forget to make sure your MPH gauge is working. Not knowing how fast your vehicle is going is just asking for a speeding ticket. Also pay attention to those cameras at various intersections. They are designed to photograph distracted drivers and give them huge fines.

– Have a way to remind yourself when oil changes are needed. A sticker on your windshield, a post-it on your calendar, whatever works, don’t forget to change your motor oil when needed. Keeping motor oil clean, pure and topped off will extend the longevity of the vehicle.

– Don’t wait for the car to break down to bring it. Regular preventive maintenance will substantially reduce expensive repair bills. Schedule preventative maintenance appointments according to your car’s owner’s manual, which you should refer to periodically.

– Choose a reputable repair shop. Ask your friends, neighbors, and co-workers who they use and why. A word of mouth referral is gold.

Car repair should be done according to these pros and cons. You’ll be glad you did.
