16 Bollywood Comedies That Are Best Avoided!

Every year, Bollywood churns out a plethora of supposedly “laugh-out-loud” comedies. However, genuinely funny movies like ‘Hera Pheri’ (2000), ‘Lagey Raho Munnabhai’ (2006) and ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ (1994) are becoming rarer as directors focus more on including comedic situations in his movies. The best we’ve received in terms of decent comedy in recent times is ‘Chashme Baddoor’ (2013), although the one starring Ali Zafar was nothing exceptional. Let’s take a look at some of the most pathetic attempts at making Hindi comedy movies in the post-2000 era:

  1. Daddy Cool (2009) – With ‘Daddy Cool,’ K. Murli Mohan Rao accomplishes the nearly impossible task of turning 2007’s sleeper hit ‘Death At A Funeral’ into an overlong, unfunny movie. His star cast included actors who were past their sell-by date, like Suniel Shetty and Aftab Shivdasani, or those whose careers never took off, like Aarti Chhabria, Ashish Chowdhury and Tulip Joshi. The whole charade about a dead body left a bad taste in the mouths of the handful of people who ventured to see ‘Daddy Cool’ in a theater.
  2. Rascals (2011) – Like Ram Gopal Verma, David Dhawan is another filmmaker who has lost his mojo many years ago. If you need any confirmation for that, try watching ‘Rascals’ on TV or DVD. It’s just infuriating to see two older actors (in age and looks!) like Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn fighting for the attentions of a much younger Kangna Ranaut. A wooden Arjun Rampal played the role of the bad guy in ‘Rascals’, which understandably sank without a trace.
  3. It’s Rocking… Dard-E-Disco (2012) – You may or may not be a Bappi Lahiri fan, but you have to admit that the ‘disco king of India’ deserved a better tribute than this monstrosity. Sneha Ullal, the clone of Aishwarya Rai who made his debut in ‘Lucky: No Time For Love’ (2005) once again proves that he has no acting skills, while Akshay Kapoor engages in inexplicable antics in the film. Bappi Lahiri himself has an extended cameo in the film, though why he agreed to it will forever remain a mystery. Watch the man’s songs on TV, listen to them on music streaming mobile apps, but avoid this movie. Nothing rocks about it!
  4. Chatur Singh Two Star (2011) – Don’t be fooled by the name: this lame excuse for a comedy movie doesn’t deserve two (or any, for that matter) stars. Sanjay Dutt, in a ghastly wig, plays the title character, with Ameesha Patel (whose career had begun to decline) as his love interest. A hot number and a couple of Suresh Menon gags couldn’t save this movie.
  5. Kambakkht Ishq (2009) – Akshay Kumar landed four clean shots in 2007, but his magic began to fail soon after. Sabbir Khan’s highly touted ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ was expected to revive Akki’s career, but he did just the opposite. With a central idea of a wristwatch being accidentally planted in a patient’s stomach and having the chant ‘Om Mangalam’ set as the alarm tone, the film was panned by viewers and critics alike. Kareena Kapoor played her role in the nonsensical events, while Denise Richards and Sylvester Stallone made friendly appearances. We’re pretty sure the latter two had no idea how bad the movie was shaping up to be!
  6. O Teri (2014) – Very recent and amazingly bad. Salman Khan and his friend Atul Agnihotri produced this film (the former even appeared for a song during the end credits). Pulkit Samrat, who wowed everyone with 2013’s ‘Fukrey’, was paired with newcomer Bilal Amrohi, and the two played one of the worst bromances in Hindi film history. Sarah Jane Dias was miscast as the head of a media house. Mandira ‘noodle strap’ Bedi had a role, but no one was interested in paying big bucks to see ‘O Teri’. There’s a good chance you won’t be able to catch a TV rerun of the movie either.
  7. God Tussi Great Ho (2008) – If you are a fan of Jim Carrey’s ‘Bruce Almighty’, watch it again or try to find a Hindi dubbed version of the film. Don’t bother watching ‘God Tussi Great Ho’: Rumi Jaffrey’s uniformly howling account of that iconic film. Those were the days when Salman Khan hadn’t started making South Indian movie remakes, and this was among his rather long list of flops. However, one feels sorry for Priyanka Chopra, the heroine of this slapstick. Oh, and Amitabh Bachhan had a bit of a role as God. What ‘Players’ did to ‘The Italian Job’, ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ did to ‘Bruce Almighty’, long before.
  8. What’s your Raashee? (2009) – This time, a Piggy Chops masterclass (he played 12 different roles!) wasn’t enough to shore up this boring Ashutosh Gowariker fest. Harman Baweja, who already had an unsuccessful sci-fi movie (‘Love Story 2050’) and a sports movie (‘Victory’) delivered another flop with ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ His Gujarati boy act was sadly unconvincing, the script was all over the place, and while there were a couple of good songs, it never lived up to its billing as a ‘social comedy’.
  9. No Problem (2010) – If you think no director could screw up a movie that had so many A-list actors (from Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna, to Sushmita Sen, Kangna Ranaut and Bipasha Basu), you’d be underestimating the powers that be. by Anees Bazmee. To ensure that the film’s host of big stars got enough screen time, Bazmee probably forgot the importance of having a cohesive story as well. A Suniel Shetty hamming didn’t help things either.
  10. Buddha Mar Gaya (2007) – The best comedic actors from previous and current generations starred in probably the worst movie on this list. Anupam Kher played the part of a corpse (if that makes any sense to you!), while reliable stars like Om Puri and Paresh Rawal strutted around the corpse in completely mindless fashion. The idea that Kher’s character died while trying to have fun “under the covers” with Rakhi Sawant was just repulsive. If you have a deep-seated hatred towards someone, you may consider gifting them a DVD copy of ‘Buddha Mar Gaya’!
  11. Shortkut: The Con Is On (2009) – Neeraj Vora got a taste of box office success with ‘Phir Hera Pheri’ (2006), and that probably gave him the confidence to create this bland fare three years later. Arshad Warsi and Akshaye Khanna’s attempts at humor were crude, and Amrita Rao’s much-hyped glamorous avatar went largely unappreciated. Goofy dialogue added to the testiness of the already convoluted plot. The only interesting thing about the movie was the way the filmmakers played with the word ‘Shortcut’ in its title.
  12. Pyar Impossible (2010) – For an actress of her caliber, Priyanka Chopra has delivered a staggering number of unwatchable flops. In ‘Pyar Impossible’, she was paired with Uday Chopra, whose only claim to fame over the last decade and a half has been the role of sidekick in the ‘Dhoom’ franchise. The film tried, and failed miserably, to capture the fresh romantic feel of ‘Notting Hill’ (1999). Director Jugal Hansraj had a miserable acting career and with ‘Pyar Impossible’ he showed that cinematic skills were not his forte either.
  13. Pyare Mohan (2006) – Released right before ‘Tom Dick and Harry,’ both films made fun of disabled people in the name of comedy. However, the latter at least had Himesh Reshammiya’s blockbusters, while Fardeen Khan-Viveik Oberoi’s leading man fell short in that regard as well. Laughs were few and far between during the film, it hardly ever gets aired on television, and the two leads (Amrita Rao and Esha Deol) have hit dead ends in their respective acting careers. We are not surprised!
  14. Bin Bulaye Baraati (2011) – In his first couple of movies, Aftab Shivdasani looked cute. Later, he began to put on weight, his acting skills deteriorated remarkably and he fell out of favor with his former mentor Ram Gopal Verma. ‘Bin Bulaye Baraati’ features Aftab in the most pathetic performance of his entire (albeit brief!) career. Giving him company in this completely rotten film were former RGV muse Priyanka/Nisha Kothari, Rajpal Yadav, Gulshan Grover and Shakti Kapoor. Shweta Tiwari’s raunchy article number added a dollop of vulgarity in this already doomed film.
  15. Tees Maar Khan (2010) – Farah Khan fell out with his best friend Shah Rukh Khan when the latter (wisely) opted out of this film, and Akshay Kumar was cast as his replacement. A fairly successful music album, with Katrina Kaif’s moves on the track ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’ being the highlight, gave the film a fair amount of pre-release buzz. Then the movie came out and people found out how outrageous the plot was (stealing a train loaded with treasure by fooling an entire town, in case you were wondering) and unanimously gave it a thumbs down. Akshaye Khanna’s movie star act elicited a few laughs, but that was it. Farah made up with Shah Rukh later, and hopefully future movies of him will be nice again.
  16. Housefull 2 (2012) – If Sister Farah can make this list, can Brother Sajid stay behind? Certainly not! The latter failed to win over critics with ‘Heyy Baby’ and ‘Housefull’, and turned it into a hat-trick of poorly crafted comedies with ‘Housefull 2’. The film had plenty of star power, from Akshay Kumar and Asin, to Riteish Deshmukh, Mithun Chakraborty and Boman Irani. However, the story of mistaken identities: in ‘Housefull 2’, the three main actors posed as ‘Jolly’ and the viewers were left as confused as the other people on the screen. Veterans Rishi and Randhir Kapoor contributed miscasts, and someone should have told Sajid not to cast John Abraham in a comedic role. However, the film was a huge success at the box office, but fate finally caught up with Sajid Khan with his next release.

Govinda, the king of Bollywood comedies in the late ’90s, tried his luck with ‘Chal Chalein’ (2009) and ‘Do Knot Disturb’ (2009), both equally embarrassing. Recent remakes of South starring Salman Khan have failed to impress critics, but ‘Ready’ (2011) can be singled out as the most terrifyingly bad attempt at making a funny movie. Rohit Shetty’s ‘Golmaal’ series might not be National Award winning material, but it looks like an absolute masterpiece compared to these films.

If you haven’t seen any of the above movies, you’re one lucky person!
