The Advantages and Disadvantages of Hiring a Dedicated Development Team for Project Management

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Hiring a Dedicated Development Team for Project Management:

The main benefit of a Dedicated Development Team (DDT) is its ability to increase the speed of delivery while reducing costs. For companies, this may be the key to success, especially in a down economy. Companies that do not make use of a DDT are likely to suffer from lost time and productivity, as they are forced to hire and train new staff members, which can take up to a year or more depending on the size of the company. Another benefit of using a dedicated team is that the DDT has the expertise and resources to quickly solve problems that arise as a result of changes to software or hardware. In a dedicated development team (DDT), a customer, the outsourcing firm, and the independent contractors, which include programmers and testers, are the only people who need to deal with the problem.

Dedicated Development Team

The main drawback of the dedicated development team model is the short turnaround time, which can be as much as twelve months in some cases. With such a short turnaround time, it is difficult for business owners to give the necessary time frame needed in order for the software or hardware to be ready for use. Furthermore, most business needs, which are specific to the industry, may require that the project managers take the role of a customer advocate more than a project manager. Since most project managers have good project management skills and experience, this tends to complicate things.

On the other hand, a dedicated development team uses a process called collaborative innovation, which allows the company to specify requirements upfront in order for the software or hardware to be made available for use by the end users. At the same time, the client retains the right to be involved in the development process, meaning that he or she has the final say on what is best for the business needs. This results in increased levels of customer satisfaction because the client gets to provide inputs and ideas about how the product or service should be designed, including changes that may need to be made based on the feedback from the customers. In a fixed-price model, this result would never happen because the cost of developing the product would prevent the company from using any innovative techniques. In the end, it would simply become another product that the company has to sell.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Dedicated Development Team (DDT)

There are also some disadvantages to the in-house or dedicated team model. One disadvantage is that there are usually only a few employees dedicated to a certain task, which means that the business owners will need to assign one employee to oversee the entire process. While this may seem minimal, it can mean that there are many other mundane tasks that remain united and underpaid, such as answering the phones and taking care of the company website. In addition, a business owner cannot control which developers will work on which projects, while the in-house team has complete control over its members.

Another disadvantage of the in-house team model is that many employees who work in an in-house environment feel isolated and without an understanding of the workings of the business. This feeling of separation from the operations of the company can lead to poor communication, which can affect the progress of projects and even result in a project’s cancellation. This is why companies have started to use outsourcing as a viable option for hiring people to work on their business projects, whether they are large or small. By hiring an external company to take care of the in-house staff, companies are able to ensure better communication between the employees and the management, which are essential to the success of any business.

However, many companies have taken to outsourcing more work, in order to free up resources within their organizations and to cut down on their overall costs. Many companies still opt for the in-house development team model for smaller projects, mainly due to the cost issue, but they are beginning to turn to outsourcing for large projects that require more complex assignments and specifications. Outsourcing offers several advantages over the dedicated team model. It allows for flexible assignment of tasks and to specify the scope of the project very precisely, to what can occur within an in-house team that can easily get out of hand.
