Can crayfish live together in the same tank?

If you’re wondering, “can crayfish live together?” Well, the answer is going to be a big “it depends.”

There are so many factors that come into play with crayfish as pets. Trust me, I’ve had several crayfish over the years. I have had two electric blue crayfish and an albino crayfish that could probably have killed a small dog.

First of all, how big is the tank you plan to use to keep your crayfish? If you plan to use a ten gallon fish tank for more than one crayfish, I would personally say that it is not a good decision. One of my crabs fought to the death with another of my crabs while living in a ten gallon tank. Yeah, they got along perfectly for a while, but it eventually came to claws, and these guys did it, hard.

I remember coming home from work one day and seeing that my albino crayfish had eaten my blue crayfish. There were little blue bits of my crayfish all over the tank. It wasn’t pretty, but that’s nature sometimes.

Personally, if you plan on having more than one crayfish, I recommend at least one twenty gallon fish tank with plenty of hiding places, or hiding places. Crayfish like to be able to hide. And being able to hide is especially important when they’re molting. Because when they molt, they become weaker and more susceptible to attacks from both crayfish and other fish.

I also recommended keeping the crayfish fed. Now, I don’t mean by any means to overfeed your crayfish. Crayfish make enough of a mess in the tank already and overfeeding them will only make things worse. So don’t overfeed these little guys.

Just remember, crayfish are scavengers and they are extremely aggressive. They are omnivorous. They love to eat anything they can get their claws on. Due to their nature, there is virtually no guarantee that they will not catch and eat another crayfish in your tank. Having said that, try to find fish that are aggressive, swim near the top of the tank, and/or swim fast if you are looking for tank mates for your crayfish. These types of fish will have the best chance of survival.

So can crayfish live together in the same fish tank? Yes, it is possible, but there is no guarantee with these crazy little guys.
