Do Labradors make good companions?

There are different reasons why people might have dogs; they may have dogs because they like or want guard dogs, as playmates for their children, or as garbage disposals, companionship or therapy dogs. Why do people sometimes even have dogs simply because someone throws the dog at them?

Whatever the reason, if you have the option of having a dog, you will choose a dog that meets your most pressing need. Some people get a German Shepherd because he is a good friend to you and a bad dog to strangers. Others buy Yorkies because they want cute, cuddly things that are as delicate as porcelain. Others get the Boxer because he is a very good dog for rough play anytime. However, most people get the Labrador because it is the best companion a person can have.

Labradors are solitary in the sense that they are not pack animals. In fact, they will bond more with their owners than other dogs, even other Labradors. Their ancestry has been among fishermen who used them as multi-purpose dogs. They helped out so much on the boat that most of the time it was just the fisherman and his dog with no one else. This resulted in them becoming very attached to their owners. Their owners also reciprocated by treating them like a member of their family by keeping them inside with them at all times.

Therefore, Labradors are very sensitive to people’s moods and will notice if something is wrong long before others. They are absolutely one of the friendliest of dogs, although some of them have been known to growl at strangers who make threatening gestures at their owners. They may not be cute, but they are cuddly as big as they are and have a playful nature throughout their lives. If you have children, the dog will be both their babysitter and her playmate.

They are the gentlest dogs around and although they can grow very large, they are very careful around small children. In fact, it is for this reason that they are so good with young children that Labradors are so popular. They may not be the weirdest breed out there, but they sure are the weirdest friends out there. Get a Labrador puppy and you will get a close companion for life!
