My Cold Steel Outdoorsman Hunting Knife Review

Most hunting knives will fail. They will rust, lose their sharpness when you need them most, or break under pressure.

Cold Steel has been making high quality knives for the last 20 years and they are well aware of this harsh reality.

Precisely for this reason they have created what is possibly the BEST hunting knife on the market. The man of nature.

Here are my thoughts on the much-hyped knife:

What I like about the Outdoorsman:

1. The 6″ blade is made of three layers of laminated steel called VG-1 San Mai III.

This steel has an inner core (cutting edge) of VG-1 stainless steel. There is a layer of much softer 400 series stainless steel on each side, giving the blade flexibility.

San Mai steel is as good as it gets without spending more than $1,000.

2. Its drop point design has proven to be perfect for skinning wild animals.

3. You will notice a ridge on the back of the blade that looks like a “blood groove”.

It is actually a bone crusher that you can use as a hammering or cutting device.

4. Directly behind the bone crusher are zippers (thumb slots). This feature is perfect for applying direct pressure when you need to make precise cuts.

5. The Cold Steel Outdoorsman has a finger guard and pommel made of stainless steel. This will give you more peace of mind.

6. Full tang construction means no need to worry about the blade separating from the handle.

That I did not like:

1. Partial serrations would be helpful on this knife, but otherwise no major complaints.

General:

With a suggested retail value of $285, The Outdoorsman knife from Cold Steel is worth every penny.

It is built like a tank and will withstand even the toughest situations.
