Release Negative Experiences: 5 Steps to Release Past Negative Experiences and Change Your Life

Freeing yourself from negative past experiences lifts you to a higher level of life. Whatever regrets you have from the past, whatever the pain, whatever the disappointment, it’s time to release it and move on. But how exactly do you release the past? How do you let go of the pain that goes deep inside? How do you rise above the disappointments, the failures, the fears in order to move on?

These 5 steps give you some guidelines to overcome negative experiences from the past.

1) Decision

For every situation that you ever change or will change in your life, you start with a decision. It is up to you whether you will continue to allow negative experiences from the past to dictate how you choose to feel today. Or you will take control of your decisions and decide that you own your emotions. Once you make that decision, the next step will allow you to shape the way you think.

2) conscious release

“I release these negative feelings from my mind and heart and choose to embrace feelings of love, joy, and peace.” When you make a conscious decision to release and let go of past negativity, you are sending positive energy through your body that positions you to attract more positive emotions.

3) Change mental thinking

Find the positive in the situation and focus on it. Change your mental thinking of the past negative experience and look for the positive. Every cloud has a silver lining. No matter how dark the cloud is, there is always something positive. Ask yourself, “What is the lesson here? What good could come of this?” And expect it, even if you don’t see it right now.

4) Practice

A baby learns to walk by practicing over and over again until he learns to walk without falling. If you’ve taken up a new trade, like knitting or anything else, you’ll need regular practice until you get better at it. Remember, if your usual way of thinking is to focus on the negative or look at things from a negative perspective, it will take regular practice and determination to create the new way of looking for the positive in each situation.

5) Live in the now

Whether it’s 5 minutes or 5 years, whatever your negative experience is, it’s in the past. Many times we have difficulty differentiating between the two, the past and the present. We bring negative emotion from the past into the present and relive it over and over again even though the actual situation that caused the negative emotion in the first place no longer exists.

One way to deal with these emotions is to say, “This isn’t happening to me right now. It’s the past. I choose to release it, look for the positive, and move on.” Sometimes I can experience emotions that are harder to let go of.

If you’ve ever had emotions that overwhelm you to the point that you feel like you can’t get rid of them right away, here are the steps I take to overcome them.

1) I look at the feeling.

2) I recognize how I feel: sad, frustrated, angry, etc.

3) I say what makes me angry, sad or frustrated, giving the emotion an outlet for it to be released.

4) I consciously make the mental change to see my situation from a positive angle.

5) I allow myself to feel the positive emotion.

6) If I find I can’t release them, I look within to Spirit and ask for help, “Please help me get over this emotion.” We are not without help when we feel powerless or overwhelmed. We connect with the Source of our power and are lifted to a higher place.
