Study mental math during summer break

Spring has officially begun and summer vacation is not too far away. Within the next few months the children will be out of school. And as a parent, what have you thought of your summer vacation? Have you thought about sending your child to a summer camp to improve his discipline? Or have you thought about taking a break from work and going on a trip with your children? All this is great but have you thought about something related to the child’s education?

On the other side of the planet, various types of summer camps are organized. Some are similar to those held in the US, while others are 2-month educational summer camps; camps that include programs on personal growth through meditation, math education and physical education. That’s how it is; all of this packaged into a program to nurture quick-learning, sharp young minds. It may sound like real torture from the perspective of not allowing children to drop out of education at all. However, these camps are intended to make the most of the child’s free time during the holidays.

The camps are usually held in mountain resorts where the weather is clean, the environment and atmosphere absolutely serene away from the daily chaos of big cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, New Delhi and the like. The camp begins with orientation and accommodation assignment. Starting on the second day: the children are made to follow the routine of getting up early at 5 AM, spending an hour in the meditation room meditating, a light breakfast, and then an hour of physical training. Students are then allowed to take a break to shower and eat a hearty breakfast. Around 10 am, students are asked to gather for math session where children learn Vedic math. During the initial two to three weeks, children are exposed to introductory Vedic mathematics and gradually progress to an advanced level. At 1 PM lunch is served followed by a 2 hour break to relax, nap or read in person.

Tea and snacks are served at 4, and the hour-long exercise session begins at 5 PM. During this session, the children practice Vedic mathematics. At 6:00 pm, the boys gather to perform community service at the campsite, cleaning up the vast empty lot by picking up litter, mowing and weeding, and many more team building exercises. Dinner is served at 8:00 p.m. followed by a discussion session at 9:00 p.m. The curtains fall at 10:30 pm and an almost similar routine begins the next day.

Today, most of the middle class in India follow this routine by offering their children the best education and opportunities at an early age. These types of camps have helped a large number of children succeed in their lives as adults today. Every day we read in the newspapers or business magazines how India’s strong middle class is asking for more. Every day we read how new entrepreneurs from India are acquiring big new companies on foreign soil.

These types of innovative summer camps help kids grow both physically and mentally. So, have you found out what your child will be doing during the summer break? Play video games or learn Vedic math and have fun?
