The warmth and charm of old oil lamps

One of the best inventions still enjoyed today are the ancient oil lamps. When oil lamps were invented, it was to light up the night, and although some use them when the power goes out, their purpose has become decorative. And around vintage oil lamps from the early 1800s, glass color opened up with topaz, opal, amethyst, and sapphire, from makers like the Sandwich Glass Company. These types of lamps were hand blown or pressed into delicate vase-like shapes and were beautifully designed. These beautiful designs and colors could also be found in the old hanging oil lamps that were initially made of clay.

When these lamps were first invented, they did not have the warmth and charm that they do today. They did not have the elaborate designs and engraved patterns that give them their beauty and charm. They had to have a purpose to provide light and were fed with olive oil, castor oil, fish oil, animal fats, nuts and plants. It wasn’t until later that they were built to burn kerosene, which was lit with a brighter light than gas. They have come a long way in terms of designs, colors and even their purpose, although the purpose of ‘lighting the way’ will always be the main one.

Today, many different types and styles of these lamps are made and most people use mineral oil, which is a liquid petroleum, which is odorless and has a very long lifespan to light them. They are also very decorative but do not match the charm of the older models. Older models not only add a bit of decorative charm to your room, but can also be a great conversation piece due to their history. Lamps like the Victorian, Aladdin, Primitive, and Whale may have a story behind them.

Due to the glass shades of antique oil lamps, there is a soft, warm glow that can be very useful for romantic settings. Having just one or two of these lamps lit in a room can be a superior alternative to the romantic setting of candlelight. You can purchase scented oils for these lamps to add an even more romantic feel to the room. Although you can find some vintage hanging oil lamps in older Victorian homes, they are rare and highly collectible, just like the more elaborate and vintage antique lamps, and collectors love their warmth and charm.
