Why is my grout missing in my shower?

Well I hope your shower isn’t too old otherwise I would recommend redoing the whole shower. Of course, we are talking about a tiled shower and the grout will usually be installed between the tiles. The problem is what causes the grout to fall off and how do I fix it.

Well, the bad news is that when the grout starts to sag, there is usually a problem under the tiles. This won’t be the case every time, but for the most part, if the grout is falling apart, it’s very likely that water has been seeping behind the tiles for quite some time and is now ruining the tile backer board. .

If your tiled shower walls have been neglected and not cleaned regularly, I recommend taking a small screwdriver and gently placing it between the missing grout line, while applying a little pressure trying to see if the tiles around the missing grout is loose.

If you put too much pressure on the tile, you could accidentally pop a perfectly good tile. You’re just checking to see if the tabs are loose and applying a bit of pressure, and pulling out the weakest tabs, would be a good sign that there’s more to this problem than you might have imagined.

If the tiles come off easily I would recommend removing the tiles from that area. Remove as many tiles as you can easily remove. If you find that most shower tiles come off easily, you should probably start thinking about whether or not you need to replace the entire shower.

If only a small area of tile comes off easily and the backing plate appears to be in very good condition, you can simply re-lay the tiles and re-grout the area.

Now, if the tile doesn’t come off easily, you can simply clean up the rest of the loose grout between titles and re-grout the area.

The biggest problem with loose tile grout, in a poorly maintained tub or shower wall, is the tile backer. This area will most likely become damaged and need to be repaired. This could require a professional to fix it properly.
