Your business snake proof

My free time these days is spent preparing for the upcoming hunting season. Each season brings the hope that you’ll pocket a monstrous high-score dollar. So before the season starts there is a lot of work to do.

I still have deer fever and have a tendency to want to shoot when a big deer comes out. I really need to talk to myself a bit. One must learn how to quickly measure a deer in their scope by assessing the length of the beam, the mass, the length of the teeth, and the age of the deer. The shrinkage of the soil is very embarrassing. You can expect to get some pretty hefty ribs taken if your trophy doesn’t score well…plus, you could get fined. There is much more to it than non-hunters imagine.

At all times, you must keep safety in mind when carrying weapons – that’s rule number one! Also, you should camouflage yourself as best you can, be odor free, consider the direction of the wind, make sure you are not visible on your blind or stand, have your rifle aimed, and have packed all the necessary gear for the field…there is a lots of things to think about.

“Due diligence” comes to mind, no matter if you’re hunting or on the job.

While driving the four-wheeler to check out the feeders last weekend, I realized the similarity between running a business and hunting trophy whitetails. Hunting is really like running a business, as finding that trophy can be as daunting a task as finding success in business. Luck and time always seem to play apart. You know, without serious planning and a lot of hard work in the field, really all you can count on is luck and chance. That’s not a good strategy and hunters don’t think much of other hunters who don’t do their fair work in the field.

There is much hype bull around the fire pit at night, but dawn brings serious determination of purpose knowing that every hunt must be launched safely and well-equipped. The same is true for running the white collar company with a staff of 5 to the blue collar company that hires hundreds.

Before a hunter roams the field, there is much to learn. Hunter listens to the “wise old man” learning all the intricacies of making big money, attends a gun safety class, spends money on the best firearms and ammunition, and acquires odorless clothing and snake proof boots.

Likewise, running a business and hunting must be SNAKE-PROOF.

To be successful, you must achieve optimum safety and efficiency in the workplace. Hiring a team of experienced employees to take care of these things is time consuming and expensive. Most businesses operate on a wing and a prayer in the hope that things will run smoothly, without accidents. That’s taking the risk of a poison attack crippling your business for years.

To ensure you hit the mark, you need a staff that is trained in all areas of the business, including; risk assessment, writing safety manuals, ongoing safety training, record keeping and more than enough accident investigation procedures.

Most leaders go to great lengths to educate their employees about workplace hazards and safety issues. However, sometimes giving your best is not good enough. OSHA can impose fines on businesses. Government and state laws and regulations change almost daily, increasing the chances of a violation. Who is watching your business? What do you have in place to SNAKEPROOF your business?

Likewise, on the hunting grounds you’ll easily prove how stupid you are if you get bitten by a rattlesnake and you’re not wearing snake-proof boots.

Experts predict that the price of everything will go up. How can you afford to hire a multitude of experts with various degrees of education and years of experience to cover all risk areas regarding workplace safety and HR compliance?

Typically, the first financial sacrifice to be made in any business is the number of employees. So how do you cover all this? There is an answer.

It’s hard enough finding time every day to effectively grow your business, if you outsource your HR. compliance. Outsourcing can lighten the load, reduce costs, and allow you to focus on the strategic and revenue-generating aspects of your business.

Many business leaders spend time and capital personally addressing these issues without wanting to hire additional staff for human resource administration and security management. Boosting revenue production should be your priority, leave the rest to the professionals.

A PEO or Professional Employer Organization plays a key role in helping small and medium-sized businesses reduce the risk of on-the-job injuries, safety violations, and failure to properly address employee issues, and assist with regulatory compliance. To make sure your business is a SNAKE PROOF unit with a highly qualified PEO. Whether or not a business works with a PEO, all of these vital issues need to be addressed.
