Champions League: Bayern Munich breaks record after qualifying for the quarter-finals
The title holders Bayern did not force their talent to secure their place in the quarterfinals of the competition.
LBayern Munich have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the 19th time, a new record for the competition, UEFA announced on Wednesday after the defending Bavarians’ qualification at the expense of Lazio in following a 2-1 victory in the second leg.
Bayern shared the record with FC Barcelona, who were knocked out by PSG last week. With 19 qualifying for the quarter-finals since the reform of the competition in 1992-1993 and its change of name from Champions Cup to Champions League, the ‘Rekormeister’ adds a new record to its collection. In its 18 previous appearances in the European top-8, Bayern has totaled three final victories (2001, 2013 and 2020,) three defeats in the final (1999, 2010 and 2012), six eliminations in the semi-finals (1995, 2000 , 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018) and six quarterly eliminations (1998, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2017).
