Coronavirus: nearly 25 deaths on average per day, more than 500 patients in intensive care

Enbetween March 6 and 12, 2,844 new coronavirus infections were recorded on average each day, an increase of 21% compared to the previous week, according to figures updated Tuesday morning by the Institute of Public Health Sciensano .

In nearly a year, 59,416 people have been admitted to hospital due to Covid-19. Some 2,112 are still there, including 503 patients treated in intensive care.

Between March 6 and 12, an average of 46,700 tests were performed daily, a total up 7% from the previous week.

The reproduction rate (Rt) of the coronavirus stood at 1.11, compared to 1.09 the day before. When it is greater than 1, it means that the transmission of the virus is accelerating.

Between March 6 and 12, 24.4 people died on average per day from the virus, bringing the toll to 22,545 since the start of the pandemic in Belgium. Since then, a total of 809,861 cases have been diagnosed in the country.
