Creating Your Website Part 1 – Keywords

Let’s jump into it.

First discover your niche

Let’s face it, if you’re interested in making money from internet marketing, you need to find the right niche. But I don’t recommend jumping with the big dogs if you’re just starting out. You can, and most likely will, get discouraged when competing with people who have been at it for years.

So start with something you know or have adequately researched.

Following the old adage, ‘look before you leap’, will serve you well in the short and long term.

Choose your domain name

Probably the most important thing to remember is to not just pick a cheesy domain name.

Do a keyword search on Google, or if you have a good keyword tool, enter your niche and see what people are searching for. You may have the cleverest name in the world, but if no one is looking for it, who will find your site among the hundreds of millions of websites out there?

Don’t just search for the keywords with the top searches.

You can be sure that this is exactly what most people have already noted. Instead, look for medium to low density keywords that fit what your website will be about.

Make sure you pick a few different keywords and write them down.

The next step is to do a domain search

This is where you start to find out what you’re really up against. Name after name will be taken, especially the short ones.

Understand that not every name that is taken actually has a website made for it. There are some smart people who buy domain names and then resell them to other people, sometimes at a huge profit.

Some domain search companies offer domain name alternatives to help you out a bit, so be sure to check them out.

Don’t be afraid to put simple words at the front or end of your keyword phrase.

For example, ‘internet marketing’. Try ‘internet marketing store’ or ‘best internet marketing’. Just imagine various combinations until you find one that seems right for you.

The extension

The extension that most people want is .com. But don’t be afraid to use .net, or even .info, if the name you want is available.

You will often find many websites that have top rankings in non-.com search engines. Because the final criterion for your website is quality. That’s what search engines are ultimately looking for.

Having your main keyword as part of your website name gives you an edge.

And you’re going to need every advantage you can get if you want to be successful in internet marketing.
