Critical thinking: Can someone be too afraid of the coronavirus if they were abused as a child?

Although there are some people who have done everything possible to continue as normal since the contagion arrived, there are others who have not been able to do so. For someone in the second position, it might not matter if restrictions have been eased where she lives.

They may have continued to spend a lot of time in isolation and did their best to avoid getting too close to others. However, when it comes to your family and friends, this might not be a problem.

a challenging time

If this is the case, your life is going to be radically different than it was before. There will be all the things that they can do now that things have changed, but they won’t be interested in spreading their wings, so to speak.

Even if they thought about leaving their home, they might experience a great deal of fear and anxiety. So when they leave your house, they will be filled with a lot of tension.

A massive risk

Behind this may be the belief that they are putting their lives at risk by going out into the world. If they have to work in a crowded environment, it might be hard for them to stay together.

As soon as they arrive at work, they might be looking forward to leaving and going home. But even when you are at home, it does not mean that it is easy for you to experience inner peace.

Two parts

This can be attributed in part to the fact that there will be a virus that they could catch at any moment and in part to the fact that they are likely to spend a lot of time watching the mainstream media. With the former on their minds and the latter filling their minds, it is to be expected that they are normally restless.

There’s a chance that they have a strong need to know what’s going on, so even if they’re not watching the news, they could get regular updates right on their smartphone. This will allow them to feel like they know what is going on, which can allow them to feel more at ease, at times.

close to the edge

After they’ve had a shot or a booster, they might feel calmer, but this could soon change after the media has updated them. After being told that the numbers are going up or that there is a new variant, for example, they could soon be on shaky ground.

Then it will not be a surprise if they find it difficult to concentrate and often cannot fall asleep at night. At any moment, it could seem that your life is coming to an end.

The proof

There may be people in your life who say they are overreacting and could be encouraged to spend less time consuming the media. However, this could fall on deaf ears, and one dismisses what they say.

If one were to think of the people they have lost to the virus, their mind might go blank. Or, they may think of someone, perhaps who already had at least one health problem, who is said to have died from it.

a closer look

Now, one way to look at this would be to say that since there is a killer virus, it’s perfectly normal for it to be so. They’re just behaving as any relational person would, given what’s going on.

Another way of looking at this would be to say that something is going on inside them, on a deeper level, that is playing a role in their experience. However, as this relates to internal material that is outside of your conscious awareness, you cannot be aware of what is happening.

old wounds

This internal material may be the result of what they experience during their formative years, this being a time in their life when they were physically damaged and perhaps neglected by their caregivers. Thanks to this, they would often have felt as if they were going to die.

But because they couldn’t have stopped what was happening or gotten out of this dysfunctional environment, they had to disengage from what was happening. This would have allowed them to lose touch with how they felt, but it would not have actually eliminated the feelings or arousal they were experiencing.

recycling the past

So even though it will have been many, many years since this stage of your life, you will still have repressed feelings and excitement. But, although you will not be aware of what is happening on a deeper level, in another part of your being, what is held here will have an impact on your life.

It will be played separately on how they perceive reality, how they behave, how they feel and what they fear. Taking this into account, there is the virus and what is really happening and then there is what is happening to them and how this makes them experience reality.

final thoughts

Naturally, if they feel deep down that they are going to die, as a result of unresolved trauma, this will make it difficult for them to be present. How they perceive the virus, rational as it may seem, will unconsciously filter through a stage in their life when they were totally helpless and helpless and their death seemed imminent.

If they started to work through this trauma, they would gradually end up in a very different place and this would probably make them calmer. By no longer projecting their past into the present and being able to think more clearly, they would spend less time in fear and more time focusing on what they can actually do to protect themselves.

Instead of being plugged into the media and allowing their stress levels to rise, which will actually lower their immune system, they will look at what they can do to improve it. This will show that they are getting their power back and are responsible for their health, rather than giving it to something ‘out here’ and relying on others to keep them alive.

Of course, when they were in a traumatized state and feeling helpless, they would not have believed that they had control over their health. They would have been easy prey and their health would have been in someone else’s hands.
