History and characteristics of genuine Laguiole cutlery

The Laguiole range of knives and cutlery is known throughout the world and stems from a tradition dating back to the early 19th century, when they were originally created as hunting knives. The term Laguiole is associated with the factories within the Aveyron region of southern France that produce this unique range of cutlery. Because the term applies to the style of manufacture and is not a trademark, this has sadly opened the door for cheaper Asian-made imitation products. To combat this, all legitimate Laguiole cutlery comes complete with certificates of authenticity which are a guarantee of quality to ensure the customer’s peace of mind that they are getting the very best in French production and workmanship.

Starting in 1920 with humble beginnings in a small workshop, Pierre Dubost would enter the Laguiole range and named his company after his father and inspiration; Jean Dubost. With an absolute premium placed on the workmanship of each piece and proud to have over 25 different stages of cutting, grinding, polishing and assembly on each item – all with strict control over each process to ensure consistent quality throughout the range), these standards are maintained to this day and the end result is that Jean Dubost becomes one of the most recognized producers of Laguiole traditions and is the ultimate in gifting, regardless of the occasion or recipient.

As well as offering a large selection from the Jean Dubost range, we also carry a considerable amount of Andre Verdier products. Andre Verdier brings a much more contemporary approach to his Laguiole production, maintaining traditions that have been passed down through the generations. Without compromising on any of the quality materials expected from the Laguiole range, Andre Verdier has introduced some automated steps into the production process. The result is a product that is much better value for money than the Jean Dubost, yet still uses the same high-end grade of steel, carries Laguiole’s vaunted certificate of authenticity, and can still boast that it is 100% made in France. .

Laguiole can be purchased as a quality gift on its own or added as a centerpiece to a gift basket. Regardless of the range you choose, or whether they are sent alone or complemented by other products, the recipient will receive a unique and distinguished gift that will last for generations.
