hobbies for single moms

Some days, being a single mom can seem like a monumental task. Having no one to share the midnight meals, lunches, and endless questions with can be lonely. And with so much to do, it’s easy to feel like there’s no time for yourself. However, it is extremely important that you also make yourself a priority. Having a hobby is a great start. Fortunately, there are hobbies for everyone! The following are some suggestions for hobbies to consider.

1. Sewing. This is an old but good. Knitting, crocheting, spinning, embroidery, cross-stitch – the list goes on. All of these hobbies can be learned with online tutorials if you don’t know anyone who does them, and most require very little money. The most expensive here to start with is spinning, and even then, you can find a decent spinning wheel to start with for less than $200. For knitting, crocheting, embroidery, or cross-stitch, a trip to your local craft store or department store and twenty bucks will give you all the materials you need.

2. Exercise. This has several benefits. In addition to occupying some time constructively and relieving stress in a difficult time, it’s also good for your health, and depending on the type of exercise you do, you can also make new friends or potential romantic connections. Join an exercise class or walking group, or work out at home on a treadmill, stationary bike, or exercise DVD. Watching him exercise is also a great example for his children about taking care of their bodies.

3. Writing. Creative expression can be a great hobby, even more so if you are going through a difficult time with a divorce and are alone with a child and need a way to express your feelings. Whether it’s journaling, trying your hand at fiction, or writing research-based academic papers, writing keeps your mind moving and gives you good, free entertainment. As a side note, if you want, you can even generate a small stream of income on the side, selling your writing on platforms like Amazon.com or PubIt. You can also join a writing group, either in your community or online to meet other like-minded people.

4. Reading. A library card is free, and books can be a great escape for single moms. In addition to entertainment, you can also find books on almost any topic to stay informed and learn new things.

You may never have dreamed of yourself as a single parent, or you may have designed it that way, but you’re still having a hard time now that it’s a reality. In any case, while parenting alone can be challenging, there are also rewards. Be sure to treat each other kindly and take care of yourself, not just your children.
