How to find real estate in the Yucatan

Last year, 2007, I took an amazing trip to the Yucatan in Mexico. I am so glad I did as I ended up buying my first Mexico Real Estate property, yes that’s right, Merida Yucatan Real Estate.

Day 2 of the trip John and I went to a realtor just as they were closing and asked to see a short list of properties in the Yucatan he was more than happy to take us so the next day we had an early breakfast John had bacon and eggs saying that he always bought investment houses in the US with a full breakfast as he was a real estate expert. I thought he was right and he also had a fattening breakfast.

The real estate agent met us at the hotel, which was very nice since due to a problem we had to move the hotels to a different location, he said that Mérida Centro was a good option and clearly explained the benefits of the area, it was great We also asked some young people about the area, as we found that they are generally quite honest about what they think of things and we thought that if there were any problems with the neighborhood, the children would know.

Having looked at three properties in Merida, we decided we wanted something big enough for a small pool, be it a lap pool or just a plunge pool for a cool dip on those hot days. We also loved the beautiful colored tiles on the walls of most of the houses and decided that these were our 2 wishes. I remember well at 2pm the Yucatan real estate agent took us to a small house with a classic entrance, wow I thought if it has so much character on the outside how will it look on the inside? $65,000 USD the agent thought was a good deal. We walked in and looked around, what great potential, our search for Yucatan real estate may be over as this was beautiful. The hallway entrance area led to three different rooms it was hard to tell what they had been used for as the house had been empty for some time but had tiles everywhere this led to a large rear garden which was fenced in with a solid wall around. so that no one could see (except the friendly neighbors of Yucatan).

Long story short, John and I went back to the office and made an offer of $45,000. The agent was a bit surprised by our offer, but he was more than happy to go ahead. We ended up agreeing on a price of $55,700 as the owner wanted. sold out. This gave us additional funds to renovate and we have already used the property for a vacation, really a renovation vacation. My dream is to finish it so that a relative can stay. I’ll update you with photos when I get a chance of my little Yucatan real estate. PS I love Merida Mexico!
