I have headaches that feel like a tight band around my head, what should I do?

Headaches are one of the number one problems that lead people to visit a doctor or take over-the-counter pain relievers. As a chiropractor, headaches are also one of the most common problems that I deal with on a daily basis.

The most common type of headache is a tension headache, in which the patient experiences a tight band around the head, almost as if the head is caught in a “bench grip.” Pain and tightness are usually most intense at the base of the skull and tend to begin in the muscles of the neck and shoulders. The headache may only last one (1) day, but it can last up to a week or more. Tension headaches tend to be aggravated by stressful situations and can be caused by prolonged periods of sitting in improperly supported positions, such as driving or sitting in a chair with little support.

Although tension headaches are the most common, researchers and medical professionals cannot agree on the probable cause and the appropriate treatment. As in many cases, it is often the most obvious answer that is easily overlooked. The fact is that most tension headaches sufferers also have poor upper back and neck posture, have reduced mobility of the neck joints, and experience chronic tension in the neck muscles and the top of the shoulder. For many people, treating and correcting these underlying causes is an extremely effective means of reducing or completely eliminating these headaches.

The good news is that these treatments do not involve drugs or surgery. Both chiropractors and physical therapists can work with headache sufferers to increase mobility of neck joints and decrease stress on surrounding muscles. They can also give you tips related to proper ergonomics while driving and sitting down, and simple tips on things to do at home when you feel a tension headache starting.
