It is important! Read poetry to your children

Reading poetry to children can seem a bit tedious. In today’s world, we often convince ourselves that we don’t have time for the simple tasks in life. We make excuses like “I have to run to the store” or “I have to do laundry” or even “My favorite TV show is on.” Once you learn about the great positive influence poetry has on children’s lives, you might magically find some time to read together.

Poetry can play an important role in children’s development. Actually, according to Starting to read: thinking and learning about print, children who do not have phonemic awareness have difficulties learning to read and write. Instead of focusing on phonemes, children focus on the meaning of the word.

Fortunately, reading poetry to children is a great way to avoid learning problems later. Nursery rhymes like Mother Goose and Dr. Seuss get the job done perfectly. Simply by reading the rhymes with children, they work effectively to help children acquire phonemic awareness.

Once you think about this, it makes sense. With rhymes, it is easy for children to know the phonetic pronunciation. When they see the word “bat” in a poem after the word “cat”, they know exactly what the word is supposed to sound like.

Even though we live in a busy world with entertainment all around us, we still need to find time for those we love, especially when it comes to raising children. Simply reading poetry with your child at an early age will help him understand the phonemes of words and begin to read and write.
