Kindle DX Readers – Customer Reviews

Now that the Internet is in full swing and more and more people are shopping online, it is important that the product we buy is really the one we want. So one of the best ways to get an idea of whether it is good or bad or if it has the parts that meet our needs is to read customer reviews of that product.

Pros and cons, good and bad, positive and negative. Take your pick – these are all ways people express what they think about something they just bought. Or maybe it’s another way of saying, ‘hey this is great and I want to share it with you’ or maybe it’s a way of venting anger and letting everyone know ‘I just bought such and such and it sucks so don’t ‘I did not buy it’.

I prefer to be objective with some comments, so I’ll remove the ones I think don’t deserve to be there, like the last negative comment I mentioned above. Let’s admit there are certain ways of putting things and some people just shouldn’t put pen to paper if they’re going to sound so angry in the process. I usually rub that kind right away. So they are not happy with something they have bought. Was it a spontaneous purchase and it didn’t turn out as expected? Didn’t you do your research to find out that it’s not what it seemed to be? Probably not. And I must admit that I have in the past; the lesson was also learned very quickly, i might add.

For those customers who purchased their Kindle DX readers, here are some of the comments that were made once they had a chance to give them a full test drive.

PROS

The DX model has a much larger screen than the Kindle 3 and that’s definitely a plus. Using the latest e-ink technology, printing and images look much sharper and sharper and are very easy on the eyes, even for those with vision problems. It is a perfect size for reading newspapers, magazines, and magazine articles.

Both screen rotation and PDF reader work as advertised with bug updates on PDF font sizes. The internal storage space has increased and the USB connection option is very useful.

Using 3G wireless, download times are fast, available 24/7, and there’s no need for subscriptions, contracts, or monthly fees. You can be anywhere in the world, buy your book and download it in 60 seconds. Whispernet also allows downloads to other platforms such as PC, iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, Mac, and Android.

CONS

Without an external SD memory chip, the internal storage capacity of only 4 GB is not enough, especially for those who want to download books or larger PDF documents. The PDF reader still has issues with font size and the ability to greatly adjust the zoom to suit the type of document. Other issues, such as not being able to follow links, using the Table of Contents, and not being able to annotate or highlight within a PDF file, make this device seem unattractive for the price paid.

Some customers say the battery life is very acceptable, but others say it’s not as good as the Kindle 3, which has a bigger battery than the DX, although the latter has room for a bigger one. Also the Kindle 3 again stands out for its higher operating speed, especially with PDF documents.

The lack of a power adapter for destination countries has some customers wondering why it’s not included, especially given the high price paid for the unit. Wi-Fi isn’t available but it is with the Kindle 3 for a lower price. Web browser performance has been noted to be slower and networks are also slower than the Kindle 3, especially when downloading content. There were many comments about the cracking of the devices and the blank screen. Does this mean they are very susceptible to damage if not kept in a cover and handled very carefully?

The inability to read at night means customers have to spend more money to buy an accessory like a clip on light or the covers that are now available with integrated lights.
