Rush Hour 3 – Comedy Movie Review – 4 out of 5 stars

Comedy moviegoers delight…

I just got back from seeing Rush Hour 3 at the cinema. Who said sequels can’t be as good as the first? In my humble opinion, Rush Hour 3 easily ties up with the first Rush Hour, with the only advantage being that the first one had the element of surprise.

The writer did a good job of tying the plot back to the original movie. The plot is very basic but flows very well. The stunts were fast, fantastic, and mostly believable. Some of them were borderline, but nothing like MI3 or the Die Hard series, which were still good movies for me for different reasons. Sometimes you just want to watch yourself watch a movie and not have to think about anything.

Back in Rush Hour 3, get ready to laugh, laugh, laugh. Chris Tucker is running the whole movie and he does a great job! Congratulations to you Chris, what a great comeback. He’s put on a few pounds, but he can still move nimbly around the scene. This isn’t an Academy Award-winning performance that Eddie Murphy should have received for his jaw-dropping performance in Dream Girls, but Chris Tucker really shows off his all-around chops.

Jackie Chan also does a good job. He helps balance Tucker’s wild and wacky antics and keeps them from crossing the line (like so much of Martin Lawerences’ work) from funny to just plain stupid. It’s all about timing and balance. Chan and Tucker’s team definitely has both in this hilarious sequel.

The Asian cast featured quite a few veteran actors. Hiroyuki Sanada from The Last Samurai and Youki Kudoh from Memoirs of a Geisha.

The huge international success of the Rush Hour series began in 1998 with Rush Hour and was followed by the sequel Rush Hour 2 in 2001. According to Box Office Mojo, these two films combined have grossed over $350 million domestically.

My theater was packed and the general mood seemed like most of the movie goers enjoyed the movie. The movie itself is packed nicely into 87 minutes, so you’re not sitting there so long that you start to wonder why you even got out. If you like comedies, this is a must see. Even with a weak plot it’s still a lot of fun.

Below is some of the funniest dialogue featured in the film:

  • Dojo Master:
  • Can I help you?

  • Detective James Carter:
  • I’ll be asking the questions old man. Who are you?

  • Dojo Master:
  • Yu.

  • Detective James Carter:
  • Not me not you!

  • Dojo Master:
  • Yes, I am Yu!

  • Detective James Carter:
  • You are deaf?

  • Dojo Master:
  • No Yu is blind!

  • Detective James Carter:
  • I’m not blind, you blind.

  • Dojo Master:
  • That’s what I just said.

  • Detective James Carter:
  • Did you just say what?

  • Dojo Master:
  • I didn’t say what, I said Yu.

  • Detective James Carter:
  • That’s what I’m asking you!

  • Dojo Master:
  • And Yu is responding.

  • Detective James Carter:
  • Shut!

  • Detective James Carter:
  • You!

  • Dojo Master:
  • Yes?

  • Detective James Carter:
  • Not you, him! What is his name?

  • Student Dojo:
  • Medium.

  • Detective James Carter:
  • If you!

  • Student Dojo:
  • I am my

  • Dojo Master:
  • He is Mi and I am Yu.

  • Detective James Carter:
  • And I’m about to kick your ass because I’m sick of playing!

Get out there and show some love for Rush Hour 3 this weekend. I bet this blockbuster will do pretty well again at the box office.
