Speaking Austrian: regional expression creates identity

The “Austrian Dictionary” turns 70. Christiane Pabst watched over which words were included.

The vocabulary in particular distinguishes Austrian German from German German. The “Austrian Dictionary” provides an orientation in the regionally grown word world. The current edition of the reference work contains 94,000 keywords. It was first published in 1951 and whose success is also due to the fact that language is constantly changing. Christiane Pabst has been editor-in-chief of the ÖWB since 2015 – and thus the highest guardian of words.
