The difference between laser hair removal and IPL: explained

One of the common questions and misconceptions associated with laser hair removal is the difference between laser and IPL (intense light therapy). Many people are unaware that there is a difference, few understand how each one works and the associated dangers.

IPL was originally created as flash lamps to treat other skin conditions (such as skin rejuvenation and thread vein treatment) and hair loss was observed by doctors and patients as a result. Therapeutic lasers were specifically developed to deliver premium hair reduction results.

SPL is another recently launched hair removal technique and stands for Square Pulsed Light – it belongs to the same device family as IPL or Intense Pulsed Light, but an SPL pulse lasts a fraction of a second longer. The wavelength of the light is not as intense, which means it does the same job, but your skin is less likely to overheat, and results may take longer.

In theory, laser, IPL, and SPL hair removal work the same way. Both emit light to target the melanin (or color) within the hair and kill the follicle. What characterizes the laser and IPL is the light source and how it is distributed.

Lasers are single wavelength devices, which means that the light source is in focus and can target individual hairs. IPL, on the other hand, emits a spectrum of various wavelengths, which means that the light source is scattered and not targeted. Unlike authentic lasers, IPL cannot use what is known as “selective photothermolysis” (rapid and precise heating of a selected structure and surrounding areas).

So what does this mean for you? The spectrum of wavelengths emitted by IPL and SPL means that many clients are unnecessarily exposed to unnecessary or ineffective radiation compared to the single wavelength of laser hair removal.

IPL hair reduction, unlike laser hair removal, can cause skin damage, burns, and scars if not handled by a professional who knows what they are doing. Since IPL and SPL are not accurate, the margin of error is much higher. Many also see inferior results and higher levels of regrowth from IPL compared to laser hair removal.

The pain levels experienced when undergoing laser, IPL, or SPL hair removal are all very similar. The sensation is described as similar to being hit by a hot rubber band. However, Candela lasers (used in most reputable clinics) have a dynamic cooling device on each machine to maximize customer safety and comfort.

Since IPL and SPL laser hair removal target melanin in the hair, neither is effective for treating gray, red, or blonde hair. In the past, only IPL was successful in treating a variety of skin types. This is not the case; Laser hair removal now uses a range of lasers to treat the full spectrum of skin types.

Even:

Alexandrite Lasers – Used to treat light to medium skin with medium to medium hair.

Nd Yag – Used to treat darker types with dark hair.

Diode – Used to treat light to medium skin tone and can also treat dark and fine hair.

If you are looking for a permanent hair reduction solution, choose a reputable organization that uses only medical grade lasers, these are specially designed for therapeutic use. Make sure that all personnel are fully trained in using the machines and that the strictest hygiene practices are followed.
