The man the world forgot

There are several reasons why a person is wrongfully convicted. Through my research, I found these two things that an innocent person is convicted of. First misidentified by an eyewitness. The second authorities do not do their job.

Can you imagine if this happened to you? The night is cold, you are lying in bed. The doors open. Two policemen drag you out of bed. Your face is pushed against the cold ground. He tries to turn around to look for his wife. Your nose hit the ground. Blood gushes out of your nose. You can hear her say your name. They handcuff his hands and force him to get up. The officer behind you pushes you towards the door. You turn left, your two children are standing there crying. Your two year old is terrified and calls you daddy! Potato! By now, you’re scared. You try to let go to get to her. An officer pushes you out of the house. You are confused and scared. In your mind, you keep repeating to yourself “I am innocent”. You burst out screaming, “What did I do?”

15 years later the world has forgotten about you. No one wants to take your case. They take you from one court to another. Your wife has given up on you and she has married your best friend. Your children are an outcast and they hate you. What is your job? When you’re screaming at the top of your lungs, “I’m innocent!” Also, no one listens to you.

I can only imagine the innocent inmates who have been wrongfully imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. Nothing can replace the pain that an innocent inmate is going through. No matter how much money a person is paid, it cannot justify or satisfy lost time and destroyed relationships.

There are several reasons why an eyewitness would wrongfully accuse someone. They may not remember what the attacker looks like they just point at anyone. Interrogations when they are forced to write a false statement by officials. Alternatively, they wrote a statement that the accuser was not the person who did it and for some reason was never brought to trial. Alternatively, the evidence was thrown out.

The authorities are not doing their job.

There are several reasons why the authorities do not do their job or simply do not want to do their job. Everyone wants to be a hero who drives away the bad guy. They are lazy to do footwork. They receive a lot of pressure from the victim’s relatives and the media. They want to close the case and move on to another case.

It is very sad to find out how many lives have been taken due to loopholes in our legal system. Sometimes we take life for granted without realizing it, what if it happens to me or someone I love? What if I get jailed for something I didn’t do? If I was in the wrong place or because I look like the person who committed the crime? Sometimes we think things like this only happen in movies. That will never happen. This article is to help us as individuals and as a society to realize the innocent lives that have been executed and their families. What can we do today to make a difference?

I pray for the innocent men, women and their families that they may have peace. For the innocent, may God have them forever in his arms.
