This is how you can make money betting on baseball – our favorite time of year!
With the MLB regular season just around the corner, it’s time to write an article on how to make profitable bets on the sport. Baseball has always been one of our most profitable sports to bet on as it can present many opportunities for the punter who is paying attention.
Why can baseball be so profitable?
For one thing, there are plenty of games to choose from. Almost every day you have ten or more games to bet on. It’s a numbers game: the more options there are, the more chances you have to find a good opportunity.
The sheer number of games also makes it difficult for bookmakers to accurately set a line for each game. There are times when the line will swing drastically as the original line was simply out of place. They have less time to spend making lines for each individual game, which increases their chances of finding a betting line that they can exploit.
Second, the odds are usually very tight to begin with. Be sure to deal with a bookmaker that offers a “ten hundred line”; this will improve your profits and minimize your losses.
Here is an example of a 10 cent line:
Tigers +135
Angels-145
Whereas a 20 cent line on the same game would look like this:
Tigers +130
Angels -150
As you can see, the ten hundred gives you a better payout whether you bet on the dog or the favourite. Make sure you bet with someone who offers it to you.
These tight odds make the “house” (the mathematical percentage of the betting volume that the bookmaker should win) quite low compared to other sports.
Here are a couple of things we keep a close eye on when betting on the bases:
1) Launch, launch, launch!
You might think this is obvious, but the first thing we always look at is who’s on the mound for each team. You’d be surprised how many people barely pay attention to this: they just look at the teams and make their choice.
But shooting is key, and sometimes you can find unbelievable situations where all the numbers and trends point to one shooter.
As an example (and this is just one of many), certain pitchers will dominate against left-handed hitters while they are only average against right-handed hitters. If they face a squad with an above-average number of left-handed hitters, that will get our attention!
2) Everyone hates Umps, but they can make you money!
This is a part of the game that almost no bettor watches, but it can be extremely profitable!
Certain plate umpires will have a tendency to participate in more games that go over or under the total due to how they call balls or strikes.
Some have tighter zones than usual or vice versa – pay attention to the Over/Under records each referee has.
