Trujillo Cheap Accommodations on the Beach and Caribbean Fusion Cuisine – A Perfect Vacation

Honduras, with its fantastic cheap accommodation on the beach in Trujillo, is undoubtedly the undiscovered jewel of the Caribbean. It offers white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and a fusion of Mayan-Lenca, Central American and Caribbean culture. The Mayan ruins in Copan, world-renowned diving in the Bay Islands, and growing ecotourism in Tela are among its best-known attractions. Other locations in the Caribbean can only offer you a beach, Honduras goes further. With its rich culture, ecological attractions, and wildlife, much of which is quintessentially Central American.

One of the best parts of Honduras to visit is the often neglected northern coastal region, best represented by developing cities like Trujillo. Here you will find the strongest mix of Garífuna, Spanish and Maya-Lenca populations. Trujillo Bay offers you miles of pristine beach, interspersed with established towns and sprawling, vibrant Garífuna settlements. This sumptuous mix of cultures is no better represented than in its food.

Local Spanish food has a definite regional flavor, accentuated by both Mexican and Tex-Mex influences. You can find burritos and enchiladas with Honduran twists, as well as the uniquely local baleadas, a simple but delicious tortilla-based snack. A local dish can be found anafres with Western additions like North American cheese and Italian sausage. In short, the food is a fusion of flavors and cultural influences.

One of my favorite restaurants on the north shore is The Mystic Restaurant and Bar, which can be found in the relaxed luxury of the Banana Beach resort, located between Trujillo and Santa Fe. Heavily influenced by the local Garifuna culture, The Mystic offers some of the best Caribbean Fusion meals in the area.

Local seafood and the traditional use of coconut are combined with Italian pasta and French bistro influences. Conch Seviche (a local light seafood dish recommended to all) can be found on a menu with North American antipasti and vegan options. The traditional Caesar salad is given a local bite with fresh shrimp. The Mystic plays with local recipes; keeping the ever popular and delicious pork but replacing other ingredients with Swiss cheese and prosciutto. Local dishes have been respected, but when complementary European, North American and Asian ingredients have been combined with the local ones to create a unique dining experience.

Honduras has a world of possibilities as a vacation destination. The fact that it is still seriously undiscovered, especially on the north coast, has allowed the tourist trade to grow organically, giving you a much more authentic experience. It also provides really good value, in Trujillo cheap accommodation on the beach it is still available, even in the high-end market. Honduras won’t stay undiscovered for long, sleepy towns like Trujillo are already marked for development in the coming years, so visit undiscovered bits of paradise like Banana Beach before the crowds arrive!
