Ultimate Frisbee Rules

Ultimate Frisbee can be explained in ten simple rules. These are easy to learn; and help provide a fun and safe environment for athletes of all ages.

The sport is played on a rectangular grass field, with dimensions of 64m by 37m. At both ends of the field are end zones that are a further 18m deep each. I suggest you find a nice open area that tends to get little wind. This is typical in low-lying areas such as valleys, or patios surrounded by buildings.

My friends and I normally use red cones to mark the front and back corners of each end zone, creating the layout of the field. However, you can use anything to mark these eight points, as we have used our change of clothes, shoes, and bags in the past.

To start playing, you’ll need two teams of seven, though fewer than seven can still be fun. However, I must warn you that a 2v2 game can be quite intense. At the start of each point, both teams line up in their respective end zones and one team throws to the other, much like a kickoff in American football. This act is known as the “pull”.

When advancing the frisbee to try to score, there are a few things every team needs to keep in mind. First, players cannot run with the frisbee. If you’re sprinting when making a catch, it’s acceptable to run out of momentum. Usually this means three steps; and some players may ask for a penalty if you abuse this rule. Second, players can move the puck in any direction. Passes don’t always have to be advances. Lastly, the Frisbee handler has ten seconds to throw, and it’s the defender’s job to call a loss count when he calls it.

To score, a team must advance the Frisbee, by shooting only, into the defending team’s end zone. Once again, this is very similar to American football. The receiver of the pitch must have both feet inside the perimeter of the end zone, otherwise it is considered out of bounds and the point does not count. After each point, the team that just scored “pulls” the puck and the defending team is now on offense.

The change of possession also occurs when a pass is not completed. This can be due to a blocked pass, out of bounds, a missed catch, or an interception. All of these instances result in the defense immediately taking control of the puck and becoming the offense.

Teams usually have more than seven people, which I highly recommend. This allows for substitutions when teammates get fatigued. And believe me, you will get tired. These substitutions are only allowed after a point has been scored or an injury time-out has occurred.

And yes, injuries can happen even though Ultimate is a non-contact sport. This means that players cannot have any physical contact with each other. This is not to say that when two people collide in the air while jumping for a puck, you should stop playing. However, if it appears that the collision was intentional, or turns out to be quite bad, then it is prudent to call a foul. It’s important to note that picks and screens are also prohibited in Ultimate.

Fouls are called when two people make physical contact. If the foul results in possession interference, the original team retains control of the puck. However, if a player disputes the foul call, the play is replayed.

These so-called fouls depend on the players. In Ultimate, players refer to themselves. They are responsible for resolving any disputes, faults, line calls, or similar mishaps. For this reason, it is best for everyone to remain calm, open-minded and always give the opposing player the benefit of the doubt.

And the most important thing to remember is something players refer to as “the spirit of the game.” This rule emphasizes sportsmanship and fair play. Ultimate is about goals and competition, but this should never be the case with loss of respect for fellow athletes, rules, and just plain fun.

Now that you know these ten simple rules to play, it’s time for you to go out and have a fun and safe time. Exercise and feel good about yourself. Ultimate is a great way to clear your mind and build a healthy body all at the same time.
