Walking in Treffgarne Gorge Pembrokeshire

Start at Nant-y-Coy Mill on the A40 about 5 miles from Haverfordwest towards Fishguard. The mill is on the main road selling teas and has a gallery attached.

1. To the left of the mill there is a steep path with a sign CLUN-SELIN. Walk down the lane for 50 yards to a trailhead sign on the left (next to the “END OF PUBLIC ROAD” sign).

2. Walk this trail through ferns for 20 yards to where the trail is divided by a signpost.

3. Take the road to the left for 50 yards to the next signpost. (Here we turn left to take a short but worthwhile detour to a viewpoint that looks out across Treffgarne Gorge)

4. Walk along this track for 100 yards to a large rock cairn where there are wonderful panoramic views through 360 degrees of the gorge and various outcroppings and granite rock formations.

5. Retrace your steps to the last post on the route marker and then turn left.

6. Continue left for approximately 500 yards, through a metal gate. At the second metal gate enter a field.

7. Cross this field towards a cell tower.

8. At the flagpole, take the farm trail to the right of the flagpole through Mount Pleasant Farm. Follow the concrete track to the farm. At the end, turn right for 300 yards onto a tarmac road towards Treffgarne. At this junction there is a small chapel on your left.

9. Now walk downhill for 500 yards to meet the main A40. Turn right, cross the bridge and go 100 yards to the Spittal sign, turn left onto Spittal.

10. Enter a disused railway tunnel and as soon as you exit this tunnel, take the left fork along a tree-lined path.

11. After 300 yards you will come to a MILLBROOK sign (next to a bridleway and trail marker). Go left past this for 30 yards to another trail marker post by a cabin.

12. Here go up a steep path to the right, over a stream and continue for 300 yards. You arrive at the gates of Hazel Cottage where you turn left through a kissing gate.

13. After 50 yards, you come to a signpost where you stay directly ahead on a path through the woods for 300 yards to a stud.

14. Cross the riser into softwood and then over a small stream into mixed wood for 300 yards to a trail marker.

15. Go right at this waymarker for 30 yards to another waymarker post.

16. At this signpost turn right uphill steeply for 200 yards to a T junction, here turn left going slightly uphill for 150 yards to a riser and then immediately a small stream.

17. Cross this and turn downhill through a grassy clearing for 50 yards to cross a dry stream bed and then walk 20 yards uphill to a riser.

18. Cross this riser into a coniferous plantation, continue through a coniferous plantation into a dense coniferous forest.

19. Walk 500 yards through this forest that slopes down on a carpet of pine needles toward the railroad track until you come to a stile.

20. Cross the stanchion, then 50 yards to a bridge under the railway tracks, then walk 75 yards to a footbridge over a river, then up to rejoin the A40.

21. Look to the left and The Nant-y-Coy Mill is clearly visible in about 300 yards, the point at which this walk began.
