Weight Loss – Looking In For The Real You!

We have all been there. Whether it’s the post-holiday bump (I’m just keeping warm for the winter!), the extra slice of chocolate cake (what’s going to hurt?) Given that weight loss programs are a multi-billion dollar industry and obesity remains a major concern, one must ask: how can we keep the weight off without losing it entirely financially and emotionally?

We all know how to eat right and we all know the basic tried and true methods of losing weight: eat healthy, exercise, don’t eat junk food. There are literally hundreds of successful diet programs for Americans to choose from. Why then do people still have trouble losing weight and keeping it off? Why is obesity still a problem?

Research has shown that weight loss isn’t about diet, it’s about your individual thought process. One of the most effective treatments for treating binge eating is cognitive behavioral therapy. There are ways to approach diet and exercise in a way that is healthy for both mind and spirit and promotes long-term success rather than short-term side effects.

Emotional Reasoning: Learn to analyze your emotional triggers and response systems. Every day is a new day and the journey to health is a lifelong process, not a fixed journey with a set end point. Some days are more difficult than others, and learning how the mind reacts to certain situations is crucial to gaining a fresh and healthy perspective on diet and exercise.

Think Positive: Often when people diet, they develop a black and white perspective. “I tried a diet but then I went off, so I’ve failed.” You can’t eat a cookie and say, “I failed, I’ll never lose weight.” Thinking positive has been shown to have immediate effects on the mind. If your thoughts about the future and the present are always positive, you will be able to diet better and more successfully.

Be Human: Humans fail, it’s all part of the process. The trick is learning to pick up after we fail and learning to do better. Okay, you ate the whole bag of cookies. Minor setback, what can you do the next time you’re tempted? (Hint: steer clear of cookies next time.)
