Welcome to Lagos, Nigeria
Have you ever been to the most populous black city? The house of wisdom. It is often said that if you arrive in Lagos and do not become wise, you may never be wise in your life. The city of aquatic splendor; located near the Atlantic Ocean. It is the smallest of the thirty-six states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but the most populous state in all of Africa with about seventeen million inhabitants. If you can drive successfully in Lagos, I bet you can drive anywhere in the world.
Lagos is one of the southwestern states of Nigeria and is predominantly occupied by the Yoruba, one of the three major tribes of Nigeria, who make up about 65 percent of the state’s population. While the remaining percentage of the population is divided between the Igbos, Hausa and many smaller ethnic groups scattered among various corners of the state.
Since Nigeria practices the federal system of government and practices the democratic system of government, Lagos is mainly governed by a state government headed by a governor elected by democratic processes. In addition, there are various monarchical rulers scattered throughout the state, they have been the traditional system of people’s government before the advent of the new system, and are still well regarded by the state government.
As the former capital territory of the nation, Lagos remains the economic nerve of Nigeria. Many corporations in the nation still maintain their strong presence in the state despite the move from the capital city to Abuja. The original indigenous people are engaged in many local activities such as fishing, agriculture and trade.
Living in Lagos seems to be on the high side today compared to what it used to be many years ago. The average daily expenses for people with average incomes are twenty-five dollars, while some people still live on less than a dollar a day. Things are really looking up since the advent of civilian government about ten years ago.
