What colors you should never put on your website

We’ve all seen a lot of websites, but have you ever wondered which colors attract visitors and which ones might drive them away?

I’m not talking about excessive tables that fall apart or spread out so far that you need to scroll to the far right to read any text. We’ve all seen weird text fonts that, if they’re not on your computer, look like dents. Wing dings fonts are those weird shapes you need a decoder ring to understand. Let’s not forget the amazing background graphics or animation backgrounds that can make you dizzy as they move up and down or left and right. Those sites have scared a lot of people and I completely avoid them myself.

I’m talking about 5% of the male population. This small but powerful group of men who could be your potential clients and many websites don’t even know they exist. First I need to give you a quick science lesson. Light visible to us humans consists of seven colors. Now when you combine any combination of these colors to create millions and millions of visible colors, but all of those possibilities start with the seven colors which are red, orange, green, yellow, indigo, blue and violet. These colors are known as the visible spectrum. These 7 colors can be seen after a rain when you look at a rainbow.

Now going back to your website, I mentioned earlier about 5% of the male population. As you may have guessed, he was talking about color blindness.

According to Wikipedia, specifically Deuteranomaly color blindness is caused by a similar change in the green receptors of the retina and is by far the most common type of color vision deficiency. This form of color blindness slightly affects the discrimination of red and green tones in 5% of men. So when you do the math for 10,000 male visitors, there’s a chance your website could impact 500 sales. Would you really want to lose that market if you pick the wrong colors for your Buy Now button or highlighted text? If you have your web pages created by a web designer, ask if they know what colors to avoid and why. If they don’t know about color blindness, tell them to consult Wikipedia or contact an ophthalmologist so they don’t miss out on any opportunities the internet market has to offer. If you have red or green banners, backgrounds, or text, you may want to consider doing a minor facelift to your website.

I hope this article has helped you decide which colors to choose for your website.
